HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Junior Nikki Rouhana's two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Bowling Green softball team to a 2-1 victory over host Marshall Friday (April 28). The Mid-American Conference game was played at MU's Dot Hicks Field.
BGSU pitcher McKenna Houle and MU hurler Sara Gulla matched zeroes for nine innings before the Brown and Orange finally got on the scoreboard. Houle allowed three hits over the first two innings, then did not surrender another hit until the bottom of the 10th. She improved her season record to 9-4 with the complete-game six-hitter.
Gulla was the hard-luck loser, despite allowing just four hits and one walk. Gulla tied her career best with 14 strikeouts in the game.
The Falcons broke the scoreless deadlock in the 10th. Senior Colleen Bates led off with a double to center, and sophomore Renee Rosemeier moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt. Senior Erin Zwinck, the next batter, hit a sharp grounder that was speared by Gulla. Bates was trapped off third base, and was tagged out in a rundown as Zwinck moved to second.
With two outs, however, Rouhana jumped on Gulla's next pitch for her first round-tripper of the year, to right-center.
Marshall threatened in the bottom half of the 10th. After Houle induced the leadoff hitter to ground out, pinch-hitter Kelli Hall and Nichole Corrigan each singled. The next batter, Carrie Dean, singled to drive in Nikki Wilcox (who ran for Hall), but Corrigan was nailed attempting to take third for an important second out. Houle got Vanessa Clarkson to ground to second baseman Angie Domschot to end the game.
With the win, the Falcons (26-13 overall, 11-4 MAC) widened the lead in the East Division. BGSU moved two games ahead of Marshall (21-24, 9-6 MAC) with five games to play.
BGSU and Marshall will return to the diamond for a Saturday (April 29) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field.
