The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will try to prove the preseason prognosticators wrong this weekend at the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship.
BG was ranked ninth in the MAC Coaches' Preseason Poll and will compete for the final time this school year on May 4-6 at The Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.
The MAC Championship begins with 18 holes on Thursday (May 4), continues with 36 holes on Friday, and concludes with 18 holes on Saturday.
The Falcons finished ninth, out of 20 schools, at the First Energy Intercollegiate held at the Firestone Country Club in their last competition. BG junior Jon Smarrelli (New Castle, PA) leads the Falcons with average score of 76.32. He has finished in the top 15 in his last four events, and in the final round at Akron he fired a four-under par 68.
Sophomore Justin Gillham (Perrysburg, OH) has been one of BG's most consistent golfers of late shooting between a 72 and 79 in his last 12 rounds. Freshman Andy Miller (Delphos, OH) has recorded a 226 total for 54 holes in each of his last two tournaments. Sophomore Brian Gerken (Napoleon, OH) has BG's third best season average (77.06) and has two top-25 finishes this spring. Newcomer Adam Balls (Woodstock, ONT) is also averaging under 78 (77.96) for the school year.
Second-year head coach Garry Winger has the Falcons playing their best golf of the year heading into the MAC tournament. BG has finished in the top half in two of its last three tournaments.
