ATHENS, Ohio -
Host Ohio University scored three unearned runs in the third inning and made it stand up for a 3-2 victory over the Bowling Green softball team Friday (May 5). The Mid-American Conference game was held at the Ohio Softball Field.
The loss means that BGSU (now 27-15 overall, 12-6 MAC) still has a magic number of one to clinch a tie for the MAC's East Division title. The Falcons will enter the final day of MAC play with a one-game lead over both Marshall and Akron, but BG holds the tiebreaker over both schools.
In Friday's game, junior first baseman Nikki Rouhana gave the Falcons an early 1-0 lead with a second-inning homer. Rouhana's second round-tripper of the year was also her second in as many Fridays.
BG doubled the lead with an unearned run in the third. Junior Jen Domschot and senior Carmen Hitterdal reached base via walks, and sophomore Renee Rosemeier hit a two-out grounder to shortstop. OU's Crystal Turner fielded the ball and headed toward second in an attempt to force Hitterdal. At the last moment, however, Turner flipped the ball toward second baseman Tiffany Bolton. The throw sailed past Bolton for an error, and Domschot came in to score.
The host Bobcats (17-25, 9-10 MAC) took the lead in the bottom of the third. Stephanie Stapleton reached base on a Rouhana error with one out. The next batter, Heather Hagen, was credited with a single when BGSU third baseman Erin Zwinck collided with shortstop Libby Voshell as Voshell prepared to throw to first base. Her off-balance throw was late, and OU had runners on first and second. BG pitcher McKenna Houle got the next batter to hit into a force play, but Sara Kraus, Kelli Bankert and Jen Sewell all produced RBI singles to give the Bobcats the lead.
Houle faced just one batter over the minimum in the final three innings, but the damage had been done. Four of the five hits surrendered by Houle came in the third frame.
In her complete-game effort, Houle walked one batter and struck out one. Her record dropped to 9-6 even as her season ERA fell to 1.31.
For Ohio, Hagen threw a complete-game three-hitter. She retired the last nine batters of the game and 13 of the final 14. Hagen walked two Falcons and fanned six to improve to 7-10.
The Falcons and Bobcats will meet again Saturday (May 6), playing a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in Athens to complete the MAC portion of the regular-season schedule.
