ATHENS, Ohio - Two Ohio University homers lifted the host Bobcats to a 4-2 win over the Bowling Green softball team Saturday (May 6). The game, the first half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at the Ohio Softball Field.
The loss keeps the Falcons one win away from clinching a tie for the MAC East Division crown.
The hosts got on the board with a run in the second inning. Lyndsay Eirich, who scored three of the Bobcats' four runs in the game, led off with a triple. The next batter, Jennifer Schmidt, grounded to BGSU second baseman Angie Domschot. Domschot's throw to the plate was too late to get Eirich.
In the fourth, Eirich doubled the OU lead with a two-out round-tripper.
BG knotted the score with a pair of fifth-inning markers. With runners on first and second, senior DP Erin Zwinck dropped a bloop single in front of Bobcat leftfielder Christy Connolly. Junior Nikki Rouhana, running on the play, scored from second, and senior Carmen Hitterdal scored all the way from first after the ball skipped past Connolly.
The 'Cats, however, went ahead for good in the sixth. Kelli Bankert led off the inning with a homer off BG reliever McKenna Houle. The hosts added an insurance run, and Kasey Dowd set down the Falcons in the seventh.
Dowd earned the complete-game win despite giving up nine hits. She struck out four and did not walk a batter in moving her record to 8-13. At the plate, Eirich was 3-for-3 with the three runs scored for OU.
For the Falcons, Houle took the loss. She gave up five hits and three runs in four innings of work. Andrea Genter, the starter, worked two innings and allowed a run and three hits.
A pair of juniors paced BG at the plate. Leftfielder Jen Domschot had three hits in as many at-bats, while Rouhana went 3-for-4.
