BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Freshman Kandice Machain's one-out single scored freshman Jess Jenkins with the winning run as the Bowling Green softball team rallied for a 7-6 victory over Cleveland State Monday (May 8). The game, the first half of a doubleheader, was held at the BGSU Softball Field.
Machain had the first two-RBI game of her career in the win, while Jenkins had her first-ever two-hit game.
The visiting Vikings scored three runs in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff single by Tiffany Stocker, Sommer Atkins moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. The next five CSU hitters drew walks to plate the three runs and chase BGSU starter Rebekah Tipton. Sophomore Andrea Genter came on with the bases still loaded and one out, and induced the next two hitters to hit infield grounders. BGSU got out of the inning without any further damage.
The Vikings got another run in the second inning, as a two-out BG error was followed by a stolen base and a Stephanie Taylor double.
In the bottom of the second, the Brown and Orange cut the lead in half. Sophomore Renee Rosemeier led off with a walk, and stole second base. Junior Jen Domschot doubled to left-center field, plating Rosemeier. One out later, senior Colleen Bates hit a double to dead center to score Domschot.
The visitors retook a four-run lead on a two-run homer by Kavita Iyengar in the fifth inning, but the Brown and Orange tied the game with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame.
In that inning, Bates walked and stole second, her team-high 17th theft of the year. She took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman Libby Voshell. Jenkins followed with a single, as pinch-runner Carmen Hitterdal took second. Junior Nikki Rouhana singled to load the bases, and Hitterdal scored on Machain's infield groundout. Erin Zwinck followed with a single to score Jenkins, and the senior got in a rundown between first and second as Rouhana scored to tie the game.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh. Jenkins led off by beating out a chopper to deep shortstop, and Rouhana bunted her to second. Machain came through with a game-ending single that plated Jenkins.
In addition to Jenkins, Zwinck had a two-hit game, as the Falcons held a 9-6 edge in the hits department. Machain and Zwinck each drove in a pair of runs, and Jenkins scored twice in the win.
Genter picked up the win with six-and-two-thirds innings of relief work. She surrendered five hits and three runs (two earned) in improving her record to 7-5. Genter walke two batters and struck out two.
CSU's Jackie Richards took the loss in relief. She worked an inning and a third, allowing one run and two hits. Viking starter Kimberly Evans gave up seven hits and six runs in five innings.
