BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Freshman McKenna Houle threw a five-hit shutout and junior Morgan LaNicca drove in a pair of runs as the Bowling Green softball team defeated Cleveland State, 4-0, Monday (May 8). The win completed a Falcon sweep of the doubleheader held at the BGSU Softball Field.
The Falcons end the regular season with an overall record of 30-16. CSU dropped to 19-35 on the season.
BGSU got on the board with a first-inning run. With one out, sophomore Natalie Phillips beat out an infield grounder for a hit, and moved to second when senior Erin Zwinck reached on an error. Sophomore Renee Rosemeier's single to centerfield plated Phillips with what proved to be all the scoring Houle would need.
The Falcons scored again in the second inning, on a one-out double by freshman Libby Voshell and a LaNicca single. LaNicca entered the game with two career runs batted in, and doubled her career total in the game.
CSU threatened in the fourth inning, with a pair of two-out hits. Angie McCall singled, and Tiffany Nofziger drove a double to right-center. The combination of centerfielder Jen Domschot to second baseman Angie Domschot to catcher Colleen Bates, however, resulted in McCall being out at the plate to end the inning.
In the fifth inning, the Brown and Orange increased the lead to 3-0. Rosemeier led off with a single, her second hit of the game. After a fly-ball out, junior Lynsey Ebel singled, and Rosemeier took an extra base on a CSU error. After a Voshell walk loaded the bases, LaNicca got an RBI the hard way. She was hit by a pitch from the Vikings' Jessica Miller to score Rosemeier.
In the sixth inning, Zwinck was hit by another Miller pitch with one out, and scored on a double by freshman Crystal Wilson.
The visitors loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but Houle fanned Jamie Cendrosky before inducing Angie Dunlap to ground out to third.
For Houle, the shutout was her second of the season. She walked three batters and struck out four as she raised her record to 10-7 and lowered her ERA to 1.30.
Miller took the loss for CSU, giving up nine hits and three earned runs. She walked three and fanned two. Each starter hit two batters with pitches in the game.
Voshell went 2-for-2 with a walk, while Rosemeier was 2-of-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Falcons are next in action on Thursday (May 11), in the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. BGSU, the second seed for the tourney, will play in the day's third game at Northern Illinois' Mary M. Bell Field. The Falcons will play the winner of the 10:00 a.m. (CDT) game between third-seeded Central Michigan and #6 Ball State.
