Hall of Fame SID Passes Away

Don Cunningham, a 1943 graduate of Bowling Green State University, passed away on Thursday, June 8 in Bowling Green.
Cunningham began his professional career as BGSU's first sports information director in 1946, a position he remained in until 1965. He also served as an assistant athletic director/business manager (1951-79), golf coach (1949-56) before retiring as associate director of athletics, emeritus in 1979.
He was elected to the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981 and was also inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame in 1981.
In retirement, he was co-director, along with Mickey Cochrane, of the HPER/Athletic Archives and Museum located in Memorial Hall.
Known as Bowling Green's walking media guide, Cunningham had the press box at Doyt L. Perry Stadium named in his honor in October 1992.
Cunningham, who received his master of education from BGSU in August 1964, also served as the director of the university golf course from 1947-57, and as the Director of News and Information for the Mid-American Conference from 1957-64.
Visitation will be on June 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Dunn Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Funeral will be on Saturday, June 10 at the First United Methodist Church in BG starting at 11 a.m. with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
