Bowling Green State University football coach Gary Blackney and his staff welcomed 104 student-athletes to the start of training camp which began with Media Day activities, August 11. This will be the 82nd season of football for the Falcons, who have won 14 conference championships, including 10 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Falcons return five starters on offense and nine on defense as they prepare for their 2000 opener at No. 6 Michigan, September 2. Two-a-day practices begin Saturday, August 12 and will conclude Saturday, August 26. Forty-one lettermen are back from a team which ended the 1999 season on a three-game winning streak.
"We are very pleased with the hard work and effort our young men have shown in preparing for the upcoming season," said Blackney, who along with Toledo's Gary Pinkel enjoys the longest tenure among MAC coaches as they begin their 10th season in the league.
"We have been a young team the past two seasons and we are starting to see the benefits that an experienced unit enjoys," added Blackney, who boasts a 45-25-2 record against conference opponents. "I really think that the success we experienced the latter part of last season and especially the overtime victory at Central Florida has given our players a positive frame of mind and helped us get ready for what we believe will be an exciting season of football at Bowling Green."
