Volleyball Falls To Loyola (Ill.)

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team opened the season with the first of three successive matches against NCAA Tournament squads, and the Falcons fell to Loyola University Chicago in three games Friday evening (Sept. 1). The match, part of the IU Credit Union/Indiana Invitational, was held at Assembly Hall.
Loyola captured the first game by a 15-8 score, then won a narrow, 17-15 decision in the second stanza. The Ramblers wrapped up the match with a 15-9 triumph in game three.
The Brown and Orange got an 11-kill performance from senior JoAnna Papageorgiou in the loss. "Pop" had 14 digs to rank second on the Falcons in that department.
Junior Caty Rommeck recorded nine kills and a team-best three blocks in the match, while freshman Susie Norris had seven kills and team-high totals of 16 digs and three service aces in her collegiate debut.
Junior setter Natalie Becker had 31 assists and nine digs, while classmate Amber Vorst also registered nine digs to go along with five kills.
Freshman Nadia Bedricky, like Norris making her collegiate debut, had six kills, eight digs and hit a team-high .313. She made just one attack error in 16 attempts.
Senior Krista Davis, juniors Chris Shepherd and Shyann Robinson, sophomores Kate Yeo and Kristin Gamby and freshman Bridget Protas also saw action for the Falcons in the match.
For the Ramblers, who went 24-10 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, four players had double-digit kill totals, led by Kelly Price with 13. Sarah Poglits had 11 kills, while Carrie Culos and Jenelle Hart had 10 apiece. Hart hit a match-high .471.
The Falcons had 42 kills and hit .057 as a team, while LUC had 53 kills and hit .190. The Ramblers had a team total of 14 blocks to BG's three.
BGSU will continue tournament action on Saturday (Sept. 2), taking on host Indiana University at noon local time (1:00 p.m. Eastern) and meeting the University of Cincinnati at 5:00 p.m. locally (6:00 p.m. Eastern).
