Men's Cross Country Season Opens Saturday

The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team, after weeks of preparation, will begin the 2000 season with a Saturday morning (Sept. 9) meet. The Falcons will race against Ohio University in a dual meet, with start time scheduled for 10:15 a.m.
The BGSU women's team also will take on Ohio on Saturday morning, with that race set for a 9:30 a.m. start.
The starting line will be located on Forrest Creason Golf Course, just across Stadium Drive north of Doyt Perry Stadium. The finish line will be located east of the football stadium, just north of Whittaker Track.
Third-year Falcon head coach Sterling Martin is looking forward to getting the season underway.
"I've been really pleased with the guys," said Martin. "They have put in great summers, and really trained hard."
Martin is counting on a nucleus of veteran runners to mesh with his newcomers. Fifth-year senior Kreg Hatfield and juniors Austin Chapin and Rob Glatz are among the team's elder statesmen that will lead the way for the Falcon men in 2000.
"Rob and Austin are really running well," said Martin, "and Kreg is back in great form. Also, our freshman have been doing well, and should fit in well with our nucleus of returning runners."
The Ohio race should be a good chance for the Falcons to get in race form and prepare for next week's (Sept. 16) Mel Brodt Invitational.
"This race will enable us to see where we are," said Martin. "We have been looking great in practice, but every team looks great in preseason practice.
"Ohio is a very respectible opponent, they always have very competitive teams. Saturday's race will be a good test for us to see where we are as we head into the season."
Following Saturday's race, the Falcon teams will host the aforementioned Mel Brodt Invitational on Sept. 16.
