TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team shot .615 in the second half and .529 for the game, but fell just short on the road against the University of Toledo. The Rockets (12-3 overall, 4-0 MAC) pulled out a 76-73 win over the Falcons (6-7, 2-2) at John F. Savage Hall.
The Rockets scored the first seven points of the game, and UT never trailed in the first half. BGSU rallied to within 12-11 after Keith McLeod's three-point shot at the 11:45 mark, but the Rockets answered with a Greg Stempin trey. UT led by as many as 11 points (32-21) before the Falcons battled back to within four at the intermission.
BG opened the second half with a Trent Jackson basket and a McLeod layup in the first minute to tie the score at 39-39. UT regained the lead, but the Falcons tied the contest again when a Len Matela shot knotted things at 48-all with 13:45 left. Matela led BGSU with 22 points and seven rebounds on the night.
UT's Robierre Cullars split a pair of free throws to give UT a one-point lead, but freshman Josh Almanson gave the Falcons their first lead of the night with a bucket at the 13:01 mark. A Brandon Pardon layup gave the Falcons a three-point lead, but UT scored the next six points to regain the lead.
The Rockets held the advantage until a Matela hoop with 4:55 left gave the Falcons a 62-61 margin. That was the first of eight lead changes over the next three minutes, before a Stempin trey gave UT the lead for good, 70-68, with 1:40 left.
Both teams had their chances in the final two minutes. The Falcons turned the ball over on the ensuing possession, but regained the ball after a layup attempt by UT's Terry Reynolds rimmed out.
But, the Falcons turned the ball over again with a minute left, and Reynolds hit a trey with 37 seconds left to give the hosts a 73-68 lead.
Matela hit a layup, then fouled Stempin on the next possession. The UT senior split his free-throw tries, leaving the margin at four points with 25 seconds left.
McLeod hit a trey with 14.7 seconds left, and the Falcons then fouled UT's Nick Moore. He hit both of his charity tosses to make the score 76-73.
The Falcons had one final chance, but Pardon was forced to take an off-balance shot at the buzzer that drew iron.
McLeod joined Matela in double figures with 19 points and a team-high five assists, while Jackson had 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Almanson made all four of his shots en route to eight points.
Stempin led the Rockets with game-high totals of 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Moore's 20 points included four three-point shots. UT made 10-of-23 attempts from behind the arc, while the Falcons were 4-of-8 from long range.
BGSU returns to action with a Wednesday (Jan. 17) game at the University of Akron, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. The Brown and Orange returns home for a Saturday (Jan. 20) contest vs. Ball State. That game will start at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
