
Gymnastics Improves to 3-0

DeKalb, Illinois - The Bowling Green State University women's gymnastics team improved to 3-0 after defeating Northern Illinois in a Mid-American Conference dual meet in DeKalb, Illinois. BGSU finished with an overall score of 193.500, while the Huskies chalked up a mark of 189.975. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both squads.
Six-time MAC champion junior Marny Oestreng (Trogstad, Norway) captured first place in the all-around with a score of 39.125. She was first in the uneven bars with a score of 9.900, tied for the top spot in the beam at 9.850, and finished second in the vault at 9.650 and floor at 9.725.
Freshman Pia Svojall (Skarer, Norway) finished first in the vault and floor exercise at 9.750. Sophomore Ann Marie Kassouf (Middleburg Heights) tied for first in the beam with a score of 9.850. It was a career-best mark for her and tied the second highest score in the event in school history. She also set a new career standard in the uneven bars with a mark of 9.825, the third highest score in school history in that event. Kassouf also finished eighth in the vault at 9.450. Junior Mindy Untch (Westerville, Ohio) also tied for first in the beam at 9.850 and was eighth in the vault (9.600).
OTHER BGSU PERFORMANCES
VAULT
Senior Jamie Kent (Bloomfield, NJ) and senior Amber Curry (Pittsburgh, PA) tied for third (9.550). Freshman Katie Carter was 11th (9.025).
BARS
Senior Heather Dankmyer (Pittsburgh, PA) and freshman Melissa Popovich (Medina, Ohio) were fifth (9.650), while freshman Kelly Kropko (Akron) finished 10th at 9.200.
BEAM
Popovich moved into fourth place on the BGSU all-time list with a mark of 9.825 giving BGSU the top four finishers in the event. Curry was 10th at 9.150.
FLOOR
Popovich tied for second at 9.725, Curry was sixth at 9.600 as was sophomore Rachel Hall (Toledo). Senior Cristin McClellan was ninth at 9.550.
UP NEXT
The Falcons will host the All-Ohio Championships in Anderson Arena, Sunday, January 21, at 2 p.m. The event features BGSU, Ohio State and Kent State.
