Akron Tops Men's Basketball, 83-80

AKRON, Ohio - Rashon Brown scored a game-high 20 points as the University of Akron posted an 83-80 victory over the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team Wednesday night (Jan. 17). The Mid-American Conference game was held at UA's James A. Rhodes Arena.
With the victory, host Akron improved to 6-8 overall and 3-2 in MAC play. The Falcons dropped to 6-8 and 2-3, respectively.
Junior Len Matela paced five double-digit Falcon scorers, with 19 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Classmate Brandon Pardon had 17 points and a game-best 11 assists.
Freshman Josh Almanson scored 13 points, while junior Keith McLeod and senior Trent Jackson had 12 and 11, respectively.
The Falcons led by a 31-27 margin at halftime, but the Zips enjoyed a 56-49 scoring advantage in the second 20 minutes.
The Falcons shot .516 from the field, including .543 (19-of-35) in the second half, but the hosts had a .577 field-goal percentage after intermission, making 15-of-26 shots, en route to a .510 conversion rate for the game.
Akron went 6-of-14 from three-point land, with David Falknor going 4-of-6 from long range. Falknor, a junior, had a career-high 19 points off the bench.
The Zips made more free throws than BG attempted. Akron was 27-of-38 from the line (.711), while the Brown and Orange went 12-of-17 (.706).
BGSU will return to action with Saturday's (Jan. 20) home matinee vs. Ball State. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
