BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team begins the dual-match portion of the 2000-2001 schedule in a big way Saturday (Jan. 27). The Falcons of fifth-year head coach Jay Harris will play no fewer than three matches on that date, all at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
The Brown and Orange will get things started by facing the University of Dayton in an 11:15 a.m. match. Then, the Falcons will play two matches at basically the same time. BGSU will meet IUPUI at 4:00 p.m., and the Falcons will meet Youngstown State University in a 5:00 p.m. start.
The 2000-2001 edition of the Falcons features one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and one freshman. The lone senior, Brandon Gabel, captains the team.
One of the juniors, Vitek Wild, returns after earning All-Mid-American Conference First-Team accolades a year ago. He won his first 11 singles matches in the fall, before finally suffering a loss at November's ITA Rolex Regional. He is joined by classmates Mike Kossoff and Ed Kuresman.
The sophomore class consists of Peter Gardonyi, Geoff Hiscox and twins Micael and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo. The latter player was named the MAC's Newcomer of the Year last spring, and also earned All-MAC Second-Team honors.
Nick Moxley, a native of Federal Way, Wash., is the lone newcomer to the Falcon squad.
Harris lost just one letterwinner, Sonny Huynh, from a 1999-2000 team that posted an overall record of 16-8 and captured a MAC regular-season co-championship with a league mark of 5-1. The title was the Falcons' first MAC crown of any kind since 1964. BGSU advanced to the semifinals of the MAC Championships.
Following Saturday's tripleheader, the Falcons will hit the road for four consecutive matches, beginning with a dual at Xavier University on Friday, Feb. 2.
