Bowling Green, Ohio - After falling behind two games to zero, the Falcons volleyball team fought back to defeat Kent State, 3-2 (30-32, 23-30, 30-24, 30-21, 15-7). BG moves to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the MAC, while Kent falls to 9-3, 4-4 in the MAC. The win for Bowling Green snaps a two-game losing streak against the Golden Flashes.
Bowling Green stayed close in the first game of the match, but seemed to lose the momentum going into the second game, hitting only .163 as a team. During the break, coach Denise Van de Walle told the Falcons that, in order to win the match they needed to "play aggressive, play fast and stop tipping the ball." Her team rose to the challenge, adding offense to their already superb passing and defense in the back court. Van de Walle saw the tide turn for her Falcons in game four, stating, "We had everything going for us. We played bigger at the net." BG hit .531 in that game, recording only two errors in 32 attempts.
Senior Shyann Robinson had a season-best night, as well as a career-high performance with her 17 kills. Robinson also posted a season-high 12 digs and a service ace on the night. Classmate Caty Rommeck added 21 kills to lead the team in that department. She also led the team with two block solos and five block assists and two service aces in the win. Fellow senior Natalie Becker led the team with 56 assists, as well as posting 13 digs and four kills. Classmate Amber Vorst, playing a new position and controlling the back court, led the team defensively with 14 digs.
Junior Kristin Gamby added 16 kills and four block assists to the victory, while sophomore Nadia Bedricky posted ten kills, eleven digs and a block assist in the night. Laura Twyman was successful at the net, recording six block assists to lead the team, in addition to her seven kills.
Also seeing action for the Falcons were senior Kate Yeo, sophomore Sara Sikorski and freshman Melissa Mohr.
The Falcons and the Golden Flashes both had 76 kills on the night, but errors made the difference. BG had 27 errors and hit .245 in the win, while Kent posted 34 errors to hit .219. The Falcons had a team total 11 blocks to the Golden Flashes' seven.
Bowling Green is on the road this weekend, facing conference rival Toledo Friday night (7:00 p.m.) and Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon (3:00 p.m.).
