Geoff Hiscox Goes Where No Falcon Has Gone Before
October 10, 2001 | Men's Tennis
Oct. 10, 2001
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Bowling Green State University's Geoff Hiscox continues to make history.
Hiscox, a junior on the Falcon men's tennis team, posted a come-from-behind victory in Wednesday (Oct. 10) action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships. The tournament, the first of three national collegiate tennis championships this 2001-02 season, is being held at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
Sixteen singles players, including Hiscox, and eight doubles teams picked up wins in Wednesday's qualifying tournament to advance to the main draw, which begins Thursday (Oct. 11).
Hiscox, who defeated North Carolina's Marcio Petrone on Wednesday, will be the first Bowling Green player to ever play in the main draw of the ITA All-American. Hiscox dropped the first set by a 6-2 score, but rallied for a 6-4 win in the second set and a 6-3 triumph in the decisive third set.
Petrone was ranked 62nd in the country in the ITA's Preseason Singles rankings (dated Sept. 13).
In the first round of the main draw, Hiscox will take on Oliver Maiberger of San Diego State. That match is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Maiberger was 13th nationally in the ITA's singles rankings.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships, the Nov. 8-11 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events (for singles and doubles) during the season for Division I men and women.
With over 300 players going through qualifying this week, the ITA Men's All-American Championships are the largest college tennis tournaments in the country. The tournament can be followed on the ITA website, www.itatennis.com.
