BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team did everything except put the ball into the net Friday afternoon, and Glen Sullivan's overtime goal gave Ohio Wesleyan University a 1-0 win over the Falcons. The non-conference match was held at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Bishops improve to 10-6-0 on the season. BG drops to 5-6-1.
The Falcons held a 24-11 advantage in shots, and put eight balls on net, but could not get a shot past Bishop goalkeepers Adam Roberts and Joe Anstine. Three times, including once in the OT session, BG players saw their shots ring off the goalposts.
Sullivan's goal came at the 102:28 mark. After BGSU was whistled for a foul, OWU's Brad Cain played the ensuing free kick down the right side to Rob North. North's hard cross was redirected by Sullivan, who was on the right side of the penalty box. The cross deflected off Sullivan and into the upper left corner of the net, past a diving David DeGraff. For Sullivan, the goal was his first of the year.
The Bishops had six shots on goal, with DeGraff making five saves for the Falcons. Roberts, who played the first half in goal for the visitors, had two saves, while Anstine had six stops during the remainder of the match.
BGSU very nearly got on the board midway through the first half. Senior Detrick Matthews headed a cross toward the goal at point-blank range, but Roberts got a hand on the ball, and it deflected off the right goalpost. Then, less than three minutes later, sophomore P.J. Behan's header rang off the post.
The Falcons' Ricky Harper saw a shot hit the left post with exactly six minutes elapsed in the overtime.
BGSU had the edge in corner kicks, 7-6, while OWU was whistled to 17 fouls to the Falcons' 16.
The overtime loss was BG's first this season. BGSU is now 2-1-1 in OT contests this year. OWU is now 1-3-0 in overtime matches in 2001.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday, Oct. 26, taking to the road for a match against Cleveland State University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Cleveland. Two days later (Oct. 28), the Falcons return home for the final non-conference match of the season. BGSU will face the University of Detroit Mercy in a 2:00 p.m. start at Cochrane Field.
