COACH VAN DE WALLE EARNS 350th CAREER WIN
The Falcons have a game on the road this week before spending their weekend at home. BG plays Ball State Wednesday (Oct. 24) at 7:00 p.m. and then heads home to play Buffalo on Friday (Oct. 26) at 7:00 p.m. and Ohio on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 3:00 p.m.
Last week, the Falcons opened with their only non-conference game of the week, beating IPFW in Anderson Arena Tuesday. The Falcons stayed at home for the weekend, playing two conference matches. BG was defeated by Miami after a fourth game rally. The Falcons rally came up a little short, as BG was defeated. 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 21-30, 35-37). In the final game of the weekend, the Falcons downed Marshall 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-26), giving Coach Denise Van De Walle her 350th career win.
The Falcons have two conference home matches next week. BG plays Central Michigan (Nov. 2) at 7:00 p.m. and Akron (Nov. 3) at 7:00 p.m. Both games will be played in Anderson Arena.
HEAD COACH DENISE VAN DE WALLE
Denise Van De Walle, the dean of MAC mentors, is in her 19th season with the Falcons, and has an overall record of 350-224. Van De Walle hit the 350 win mark (the most wins achieved at a MAC school by one coach) in the BG win over Marshall (Oct. 20).
Kris Pesorda, a former BG standout, is in her second season as assistant coach for the Falcons. The 2000 season student assistant for the Brown and Orange, Sean Huiet, is in his first season as assistant coach.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons won both a non-conference match and a conference match last week, defeating IPFW and Marshall. The Marshall win gave Coach Van De Walle her 350th career win. BG was defeated by Miami, 1-3. The Falcons are now 12-5 overall and 5-4 in the MAC.
THE OPPONENTS
Last week, Ball State split two conference matches, defeating Buffalo (1-3), before losing to Eastern Michigan (1-3). The Cardinals have not been beaten at home all season and have a 37 match winning streak in John E. Worthen Arena. Ball State moves to 12-6 overall and 8-2 in the MAC. Head coach Randy Litchfield is in his 13th season with Ball State and welcomes back ten letterwinners, including five starters.
Buffalo played two conference matches last week, losing to both Kent State (1-3) and Akron (0-3). Buffalo is 4-15 overall and 0-10 in the MAC. Head coach Nadine Lilavois is in her third year with the Bulls and welcomes back eight letterwinners, including five starters. BG defeated Buffalo in their matchup earlier this season (Oct. 5), 3-2.
Ohio had three matches last week, including a non-conference match against Morehead State. The Bobcats defeated the Eagles (3-2), before losing two conference matches against Eastern Michigan (0-3) and Western Michigan (1-3). Ohio moves to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the MAC. Head coach Mike Lessinger is in his second year with the Bobcats and welcomes back six letterwinners, including three starters.
THE SERIES
Ball State leads the series over BG, 28-10-1. Ball State won the meeting last season in five games.
Bowling Green leads the series over Buffalo, 6-0. BG defeated the Bulls earlier this season (Oct. 5), 3-2.
BGSU also leads the series over Ohio, 38-10. Bowling Green won the meeting last season in four games.
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
In the only non-conference game of the week, BG defeated IPFW (Oct. 16) 3-0...Every Falcon had an opportunity to contribute to the win...The Falcons were led by Caty Rommeck's 13 kills, two service aces, five digs and three block assists... Setter Natalie Becker had 37 assists as well as six kills with no errors, hitting .462, as well as seven digs...Kristin Gamby had eight kills and led the team with 11 digs...Nadia Bedricky, playing only one game, matched Norris's kill performance with eight and contributed four digs, as well...True freshman Melissa Mohr posted her first collegiate kill and block solo, as well as four digs in the win...In the 3-1 loss against Miami (Oct. 19)...Bowling Green was led by Kristin Gamby, who posted 18 kills, hitting .286, and two block assists...Caty Rommeck had 17 kills and five total blocks, as well as 10 digs in the loss...Natalie Becker led the team with 52 assists as well as posting double digit digs, with 13, to lead the team...Also posting double digit digs for the Falcons were Kate Yeo, Karen Amstutz, Susie Norris, and Shyann Robinson...In the last game of the week, BG defeated Marshall 3-0, giving Coach Van De Walle her 350th win...Bowling Green was led by Caty Rommeck's 23 kills, 10 total blocks, including a career-high six block solos, and five digs...Rommeck's kill performance was her highest in a three-game match all season...Setter Natalie Becker led the team with 37 assists, as well as posting five kills to hit .556, her season high...Becker also had three block assists and six digs...Defensive specialist, Karen Amstutz, had a team high and season high 12 defensive digs...Susie Norris was second on the team with 11 kills and also posted 12 digs, her season high for a three-game match...Amber Vorst posted double digit digs, as well, hitting 11.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
The Falcons have several players among the various category leaders in the Mid-American Conference statistics as of October 22, 2001...Senior Caty Rommeck is fifth in the league in hitting percentage with .319, first in the MAC in kills per game (4.79) and second in blocks (1.55)...Senior Natalie Becker averages 11.78 assists, good for fourth in the MAC... Sophomore Laura Twyman is 10th in the MAC in blocks with a 1.03 average...Junior Kristin Gamby is seventh in the MAC with a 3.52 kills per game average...As a team, the Falcons are fourth in the league in blocks (2.58)...BGSU ranks eighth in digs (14.80) and sixth in hitting pct. (.212) and sixth in assists (13.39)...The Falcons are sixth in kills (15.05) and 12th in service aces (1.26) for the 2001 season.
ROMMECK MOVES UP
Following the Marshall game, Caty Rommeck's performance moves her higher in the Bowling Green career records list. Her 912 total kills makes her 10th on the all-time list...her 100 block solos moves her to eighth, while her 261 block assists also places her eighth...Her 361 total blocks earns her the eighth spot on the all-time list, as well.
Her performance against Marshall tied the school record for six block solos in a three game match, as well as setting her own career high for solo block performance.
