Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green jumped out to a 2-1 lead on visiting Wayne State Friday night but a late goal by the Warriors and a scoreless overtime saw the game end in a 4-4 tie in front of 2,613 at BGSU Ice Arena. The game was a non-conference matchup for the Falcons.
WSU's Jason Durbin scored a power play goal at 18:15 in the third period after Ryan Wetterberg's obstruction penalty at 17:38 gave the visitors the man advantage. Dustin Kingston and Billy Collins assisted on the goal.
Wayne State (3-5-1) got on the board first at 7:54 of the first period on a power play goal by Tyler Kindle, his first of two on the night. The Falcons responded, however, with even-strength goals by sophomore Roger Leonard (13:43), his first of the season, and freshman Denis White (17:39), his first of his career. Scott Hewson and Marc Barlow assisted on Leonard's goal while Erik Eaton and D'Arcy McConvey assisted on White's goal for a 2-1 BGSU lead after one period.
The Warriors scored two goals in the second period, regaining the lead on Maxim Starchenko's goal at 17:26, 3-2. But, freshman Ryan Minnabarriet knotted the game at 18:24, 3-3, with assists by Kevin Bieksa and Greg Day. It was Minnabarriet's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Then, senior Scott Hewson gave Bowling Green a 4-3 lead just 2:17 into the third period, setting up Durbin's game-tying goal at 18:15.
"We harped on team defense all week long and we talk about it, and talk about it," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers, "and we go out tonight and just don't execute. There were far too many odd-man rushes in the game and we paid a price for it.
"Four goals should be enough to win a hockey game."
Junior Tyler Masters had 29 saves in the net for BGSU while David Gurrera had 30 stops for Wayne State. WSU was 2-for-6 on its power plays and Bowling Green was 1-for-9.
Friday night's game was the first-ever between the two schools. Bowling Green (2-6-3 overall) travels to Wayne State on Saturday night to complete the two-game series. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
