Fraser, Mich. - Bowling Green used two goals in the first and third periods to end its two-game series against Wayne State University with a 4-1 victory at the Fraser Ice Arena on Saturday night.
The Falcons scored its lone power play goal of the night on its first attempt early in the game. Senior forward Scott Hewson took a pass from Marc Barlow and shot past WSU goalie Dave Guerrera from outside the crease at 2:40 of the first period for a 1-0 lead. Roger Leonard was credited with an assist in addition to Barlow.
Barlow then added an even strength goal at 8:57 to extend Bowling Green's lead to 2-0. Matt Lynn assisted on Barlow's score for his first collegiate point.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second period before Wayne State cut to within one at 10:05 of the third period on a goal by Billy Collins. The goal came just 27 seconds after Bowling Green goalie Jordan Sigalet stopped a penalty shot by WSU's Chris Vail.
Bowling Green answered with a short-handed goal by Tyler Knight at 16:06 from assists by Kevin Bieksa and Brian Escobedo. It was Knight's first goal of the season. The Falcons then added an empty-net goal from Colen Pappas at 18:59 from an assist by Bieksa for the final 4-1 verdict.
"The penalty save was huge," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "We did a good job all game to get the puck deep into their zone except for a couple times in the third. Each line held their own. I think we had total control for 50 minutes."
Sigalet earned his first collegiate victory at Bowling Green and ended with a career-high 29 saves in his third start of the season. Guerrera finished with 27 stops for WSU.
Bowling Green was 1-for-8 on the power play while the Warriors were 0-for-6. The Falcons led in shots attempted, 31-30.
With the victory, Bowling Green moves to within one win of capturing the school's 700th varsity victory in 32 years of hockey (699-494-68), and Powers is one decision away from his 250th win (249-201-38) in 13 years of collegiate coaching.
The Falcons travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., over Thanksgiving Break to play Central Collegiate Hockey Association opponent Lake Superior State next weekend, Nov. 23-24. Faceoffs are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
