YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - "We wanted this game badly. We pointed to this as an important momentum-builder, to give the team confidence in the system we're running and the new direction of the program. I think the staff put a lot of pressure on themselves for this game. It's a big first win to get us headed in the right direction."
"The game was not a pretty game at times, but we grinded it out. (BGSU men's basketball coach Dan) Dakich talks a lot about grinding out wins, and I feel like we did that tonight. I'm not sure that we're going to win a lot of pretty games, so we have to do our best to grind out wins, too."
"We made enough plays to win. Clearly, though, I'm really disappointed in our rebounding. We were outrebounded against a very young (YSU) front line. I'm really pleased that, after we struggled in the (exhibitions) with turnovers, that we went to halftime with only three turnovers and ended the game with just 10. To end the game with 10 turnovers, especially when they picked up the pressure at the end, is phenomenal."
(On senior Francine Miller, who hit a three-pointer to put BG up by eight points with 1:00 left:)
"We worked out to run a lot of special plays for Francine down the stretch. If we were going to lose after leading for most of the game, I wanted to go down with our best player having the ball in her hands. And, she missed some shots that I think she'll normally make. It's hard to say that a person who goes out and scores 26 points didn't play well, but she missed a lot of shots that on normal nights, I think, will go in. She made a big one at the end, though."
(On sophomore Stefanie Wenzel, who had six points off the bench:)
"Stefanie has earned the right to be the first guard off the bench at the wing position. She makes plays in practice, and she's probably the most well-conditioned athlete we have. I just need her to feel more comfortable. She didn't play a lot last year, so she's still, minute-wise, a lot like a green freshman. She'll make a play, and then she'll make a mistake. But, the one thing you know with Stefanie is that she'll always keep playing. She won't let a mistake bother her. She's been a great spark off the bench, and we're going to need it, because we can't play Kim (Griech) and Francine 40 minutes a game."
