Bowling Green, Ohio - Five players scored in double figures and BGSU shot 75 percent in the second half to pull away from and defeat Shawnee State, 89-70, Thursday night in Anderson Arena. It was the final exhibition game for the Falcons, who open the season next Thursday at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska against Ole Miss.
"I think our team is going to be a grind-it-out team," said fifth-year coach Dan Dakich. "We are not going to be a team that dominates you and beats you by 30, but it's a team that grinds and grinds and that is what it has to be and in order to do that we can't have 18 turnovers, but, I thought we got some good play from some guys."
Senior Len Matela scored 20 points and sophomore Kevin Netter added 19 to lead a dominant inside attack for the Falcons. Freshman Erik Crawford had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists, freshman Germain Fitch had 10 points, five boards and two blocks, and Josh Almanson added 10 points.
The Falcons shot 64.0 from the field, while limiting the Bears to 38.9 percent shooting from the floor. BGSU won the battle of the boards, 36-21. The Falcons led 36-30 at halftime.
