BGSU Holds Football Awards Banquet

Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University football team celebrated its outstanding turnaround at its annual awards banquet, Saturday. BGSU finished 8-3 this season, a six-game improvement over their 2-9 showing in 2000. MAC Coach of the Year Urban Meyer spent most of the evening glowing about the impact the departing senior class had on this year's success. Senior All-American nose tackle Brandon Hicks was honored as the team's most valuable player. Fifteen awards were bestowed on players, one on a former Falcon standout and one on a contributor/supporter.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER (As selected by his peers)
92 Brandon Hicks Named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and fourth team All-American by the Sporting News... consensus first-team All-MAC ...Vern Smith Award nominee... finished as active career leader in sacks (20) and TFL's (43)...had 175 career tackles...had six stops against Northwestern...had four TFL's and two sacks against Miami...notched a safety against Akron...tied a career-high three sacks against Marshall...scored his second career TD with a 31-yard interception return against Temple...earned East Division Player of the Week...also had two sacks among his seven tackles...had four tackles, a QB hurry, and a pass deflection at Missouri.
PRESIDENT'S AWARD

44 Chris Haneline Has 157 career tackles...finished second on the team with 78 tackles... also posted 11 tackles for a loss and five sacks...had an interception, five pass deflections, seven quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, a blocked kick and a fumble recovery...named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week after he had nine tackles against Toledo...earned MAC East Defensive Player of the Week with 18 stops against Northwestern ...also forced a fumble and had a sack...led the team with seven tackles against Ohio...had six tackles and a blocked kick against WMU...had seven tackles and a forced fumble against Kent State...had seven tackles and a sack against Marshall...had an interception on the second play from scrimmage to set up the first Falcon score against Buffalo...has a 3.34 gpa in criminal justice.

4 Kurt Gerling Team captain...caught a pass in each of the 41 games he played.....ranks seventh in BGSU history with 2,191 yards receiving and eighth with 152 receptions for his career...had 18 career TD's...had a season-best seven catches for 72 yards at Northwestern... had four catches for 56 yards and a TD against Toledo...caught 36 passes for 436 yards and six TD's as a senior...1999 MAC Freshman of the Year.
90 Ryan Wingrove 131 tackles, 14 sacks and 38 TFL's in his career...team captain...had eight tackles and two sacks against Toledo... had 56 tackles, 16 for a loss and six sacks...had seven tackles and recovered a fumble at Northwestern...had a career-high 10 tackles and three TFL's against Miami...had six tackles, a sack and two forced fumbles against KSU...second on the team with seven tackles for a loss...had five tackles, including two for a loss against Temple...had five tackles and a sack at Missouri .
76 Malcolm Robinson Team captain...made his 33rd consecutive start, and 22nd at right tackle, against Toledo ...started all 11 games at right tackle in 2000...in 1999, earned his first letter by starting all 11 games (10 at defensive tackle, one at nose guard).

91 Chris Glantzis Finished fourth on the team with 57 tackles, including 13 tackles for a loss and five sacks...forced a team-high four fumbles... added five pass deflections...Had seven stops against Northwestern...posted eight tackles against Miami...had five tackles, including three for a loss at Akron...had four tackles, two forced fumbles and two TFL's against Kent State...had a team-high eight tackles against Marshall...also had two QB hurries...had six tackles and a half-sack against Temple... had seven tackles, two breakups and a QB hurry against Buffalo... also started at Missouri.

MOST VALUABLE OFFENSIVE BACK
27 John Gibson Finished his career with 1,199 yards and 10 TD's... made 10 career starts... rushed 97 times for 444 yards... had three TD's ... averaged 4.6 yards per carry... posted his second career 100-yard effort (116) against WMU ...had a career-long 41-yard gain in that game...had 85 rushing yards against Kent State...had 55 yards on 10 carries and a TD at Missouri.

48 Pat Fleming Averaged 40.1 yards per punt...landed 20 inside the 20-yard line...averaged 40 yards per punt in his career...averaged a career-best 46.6 yards per punt against Miami...landed five inside the 20...had four of his punts land inside the 20-yard line...averaged 43.1 yards per punt at Missouri...had a 62-yard effort and put three inside the 20.
