TUCSON, Ariz. - Junior Renee Rosemeier hit her first career homer, a grand slam, and added a two-run double as the Bowling Green State University softball team opened the 2001 season with an 8-3 win over the University of the Pacific Friday (Feb. 16). The game, part of the Pepsi Arizona Classic, was held at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.
Rosemeier's hitting prowess made a winner out of BGSU pitcher Jessie Milosek. The junior pitched the final three-and-two-thirds innings in relief of classmate Andrea Genter.
Pacific (3-3) got on the board first, with a single run in the bottom of the second inning. The Falcons had left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, and the Tigers returned the favor in the bottom of that frame.
In the second, UOP scored via a walk, a sacrifice bund and a double.
BGSU rallied for three runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth. In the fourth inning, senior Angie Domschot drew a one-out walk off UOP losing pitcher Jennifer Dacre, who had entered the game with an earned-run average of 0.69 on the year. With two down, senior Jen Domschot doubled to send her twin sister to third. Rosemeier doubled to centerfield to plate both runners, and senior Nikki Rouhana followed with a two-bagger to score pinch-runner Marla Murphy.
In the fifth inning, senior Lynsey Ebel led off with a double, and a groundout by sophomore Crystal Wilson advanced pinch-runner Jody Johnson to third base. Then, Tucson native Kandice Machain reached first on a fielder's choice as Johnson scored. Machain took second base on a groundout.
Junior Holly Frantz and Jen Domschot drew back-to-back walks to load the bases before Rosemeier cleared them with the grand slam. The six RBI on the afternoon were a career high for Rosemeier, who had a career total of 16 RBI entering the game.
Both the Falcons and Tigers had eight hits in the game, with Ebel, Rosemeier and Rouhana collecting two apiece for the Brown and Orange. Genter and Milosek each allowed four hits in three-plus innings, with Milosek surrendering two of the Tigers' three runs.
The Falcons were scheduled to return to action immediately after the Pacific game, taking on third-ranked Arizona.
