Kassouf Named MAC Gymnast of the Week

Cleveland, Ohio -Bowling Green State University sophomore Ann Marie Kassouf (Middleburg Heights) was named MAC Co-Gymnast of the Week along with sophomore Amy Bodus of Ball State.

Ann Marie Kassouf Bowling Green (So., Middleburg Heights, Ohio)
Kassouf set a personal-best in two events, taking the all-around title with a score of 39.125 and the title on the beam (9.900) in a 195.950-195.475 win over Ball State. Her beam score ranks second all-time in BGSU history.
Amy Bodus Ball State (So., Waukesha, Wis.)
Bodus turned in three season-bests, including a BSU record tying 9.900 on the beam against Bowling Green. Bodus, who tied for first place on the beam, also tied for first all-around with a career-high 39.125. She finished second on the floor exercise (9.850) and scored a season-high 9.700 on the bars.
Other Nominees
Laura Chow (CMU, So., London, Ontario) helped the Chippewas to a 195.950-195.900 win over Kent State by winning a pair of events. She had a perfect 10.000 in winning the vault and won the balance beam with a 9.900. Both scores were career marks for Chow.
Dana Stencel (EMU, Sr., Cheektowaga, N.Y.) turned in season-best scores in both of her individual events in the win over Rutgers, February 17. Capping off the third-best EMU score on the vault, Stencel recorded a 9.650 average in the event, breaking her previous record of 9.600, which she set twice, at the State of Michigan Classic, February 4, and at Central Michigan, February 11. On the beam, Stencel claimed her first event title of the season, with a stellar 9.850 score.
Jessie James (KSU, Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio) recorded three personal bests and tied another in Kent State's meet against Central Michigan Feb. 16. She posted a 39.275 in the all-around, tied for first in the floor exercise with a 9.950, tied for fourth on beam with a 9.750 and tied for sixth on the bars with a 9.825. James now has scored over a 9.850 on the floor exercise three times this season.
Anna Gardina (NIU, So., Gahanna, Ohio) placed second all-around with a career-high score of 38.950. The score ties for seventh best in NIU history. Gardina placed in two events, with a third-place finish on the beam (9.800) and a fifth-place finish on the floor exercise (9.750). She scored 9.725 on the vault and 9.675 on the bars.
Kristen Maul (WMU, Jr., Clinton Township, Mich.) played a major role in WMU's record-breaking performance versus Pittsburgh. She collected three scores of 9.800-and-above with a tie for third with a 9.800 on the uneven bars, a first-place finish of 9.800 on the balance beam and a 9.875 on the floor exercise. Maul,s floor score tied the school record.

Ball State: set a school standard with a team score of 195.475 in a tight loss to Bowling Green (195.950) on Friday. The Cardinals posted season best performances on the vault (48.575), bars (48.850) and beam (48.975). Amy Bodus tied the school record on the beam with a first-place tying 9.900 mark. Bodus also bested her career high and tied for first place all-around (39.125). She placed second on the floor exercise as well. After three straight weeks on the road, Ball State retuns home to host Northern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 23. BSU looks to defend an 18-match winning streak that started in in 1999 at Irving Gym.
Bowling Green: set a new school records with a 195.950-195.475 win over Ball State. Sophomore Ann Marie Kassouf set a personal best on the beam (9.900) and all-around (39.125), winning both events. Her beam score was the second highest in school history.
Central Michigan's team score of 195.950 in a .050 victory over Kent State was a new school record. Tammy Verrinder won the all-around with a career-best 39.400. Michele Orloski took top honors in the floor exercise with a career-best 9.95. Andrea Price also turned in a pair of strong performances. She tied for second on the bars with a 9.875 and tied for sixth in the floor exericse with a 9.90. Both were career best marks for Price. Gina Black had career bests in the all-around (39.050), floor exercise (9.875) and vault (9.75).
Eastern Michigan: team extended its win streak to four consecutive meets with a convincing 193.800-186.675 victory over non-conference foe Rutgers University, February 17. The Eagles will be back in action, Friday, February 23, when they host Bowling Green in MAC competiton. Competition begins at 7:00 p.m. in EMU's Warner Gym. Two days later, Kent State makes the trip to Ypsilanti for another conference dual meet. Competition against the Golden Flashes kicks off at 2:00 p.m.
Kent State: The Kent State gymnastics team (7-5, 2-1 MAC) lost its first conference meet of the 2001 season, 195.900-195.950 to the Central Michigan Chippewas (2-8, 1-3 MAC) Feb. 16. Despite the loss, the Golden Flashes, team total was the fourth highest in school history. Sophomore Jenny Eckel (Milford, Ohio/Milford) was the high all-arounder for Kent State finishing second with a personal-best score of 39.350. Eckel won the bars and tied for first on the floor exercise with a 9.900 and a 9.950, respectively. Freshman Jessie James finished third in the all-around with a career-high 39.275. James also scored bests on bars with a 9.825 and a 9.750 on beam. She also shared a piece on the floor title with Eckel, scoring a personal-best 9.950. Other personal-highs for the Golden Flashes include senior Kelly Lovejoy with a 9.875 on the bars and a 9.875 on the floor, and senior Jill Mackey with a 9.950 on the floor. Senior Airelle Hunter recorded a personal-best on the bars with a 9.825. Jana Heitmeyer set a new personal mark on the beam with a 9.750.
Northern Illinois: defeated Texas Womens University in a quadrangular at New Hampshire. Host New Hampshire won the meet (194.950), edging out Michigan State (194.900). NIU place third (189.050), ahead of TWU (189.000). The Huskies, score marked just the second time this season that they have scored below their average of 190.100. The squad has surpassed last year,s high score of 189.550 four times this season. Senior Reyna Gilbert has scored a 38.000 or better all-around in her last four outings, including a 38.025 at New Hampshire. She placed fifth on the beam (9.775) and has only had three scores under 9.500 in her last four meets.
Western Michigan posted a school-record 194.750 in the victory over Pittsburgh. The Broncos earned a season-high in the floor exercise for the second-straight week, this time posting a school-record 49.275. Freshman Christy Sassic set a new program standard in floor with a 9.925, to become only the second athlete ever (Andrea Ruhe was the first) at WMU to earn above a 9.900. WMU finished 6-0 at home this season, the first undefeated mark in Kalamazoo since 1985. The team heads into the final stretch of the season with six-straight road events.
