CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior Brandon Gabel (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) has been named the Mid-American Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office has announced. Gabel, a member of the Falcon men's tennis team, earns the honor for the first time in his BGSU career.
Gabel won the MAC award after going 3-0 last weekend, helping the Falcons to a pair of dual-match wins. BGSU won by identical 5-2 scores over Marquette and UW-Green Bay in a pair of matches held in Milwaukee, Wis.
In the Marquette match, Gabel recorded a victory at the fifth singles flight and teamed with sophomore Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) for a win at #2 doubles. Gabel and Lopez-Acevedo also won at the second doubles flight vs. UWGB.
On the year, Gabel has an 11-4 singles record, and has teamed with Lopez-Acevedo to go 4-1 in doubles.
Gabel, the lone senior on the BGSU squad, has a 3.38 cumulative grade point average as a finance major.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is presented to one male and one female each week. The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and have performed well during the past week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Jay Harris will put their undefeated dual record on the line with a pair of matches this weekend. BGSU will host Ferris State University in Friday (Feb. 23) action, beginning at 6:00 p.m., then will face DePaul University in a 4:00 p.m. start Saturday (Feb. 24). Both matches are scheduled to be played at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo.
