THE GAME: The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team, having snapped a five-game losing streak, now looks to begin a winning streak. The Falcons (9-12 overall, 5-5 MAC) must do so on the road, however, as BG begins a two-game road swing with a Saturday (Feb. 10) game against the University of Akron (4-17, 2-8 MAC). Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena (5,942).
Following the UA game, the Falcons will play a Monday (Feb. 12) game at Miami University. The Falcons and RedHawks will do battle in a 7:00 p.m. start at Millett Hall (9,200) in Oxford, Ohio.
COACH DEE KNOBLAUCH: Falcon head coach Dee Knoblauch is in her third season at her alma mater, and has a record of 33-43. She has a 22-20 ledger in MAC play. Knoblauch (pronounced: kuh-NOB-low), a 1983 graduate of the University, assumed the reins of the Falcon program on August 21, 1998.
Knoblauch, in her 14th season as a head coach, has an overall record of 215-162 (.570). She came to BGSU after 11 seasons at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio. Over her final five years there, she led the Purple Raiders to a 116-32 mark (.784), including three NCAA Tournament appearances and two NCAA Division III "Final Four" berths.
As a player, Knoblauch was a two-time All-MAC Second-Team selection, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC First Team as a senior. She led the league in assists in each of her last two seasons, and still holds all of the school records in that category.
ABOUT THE FALCONS: BGSU sports a record of 9-12 on the season, and the Falcons are 5-5 in MAC play. After opening league action with four consecutive wins, the Falcons lost the next five contests. BG rebounded, however, to post a 77-75 decision over Ohio Wednesday (Feb. 7).
If the regular season were to end today, the Falcons would be tied with Eastern Michigan and Miami for sixth place overall. BGSU has yet to meet either of those teams, but will face the RedHawks twice and the Eagles once during the season's final few weeks.
Individually, junior Francine Miller leads the team in scoring, with 13.3 points per game. Miller, an All-Mid-American Conference First-Team selection last year, has hit double digits in scoring in 11 of her 15 games this year, including each of the last four. She had a team-high 21 points in Wednesday's win, and gave the Falcons the lead for good by sinking a pair of free throws with 10.7 seconds left.
Senior Angie Farmer is second on the team with 10.1 points per outing, while classmate Afra Smith is third at 8.7 points per game. Sophomore Kim Griech also averages 8.7 points, while junior Dana Western is fifth on the team with 8.1 markers per contest.
True freshman Lindsay Austin is averaging 6.3 points, as is senior Jackie Adlington.
The Falcons are 5-4 at Anderson Arena, 2-8 on the road and 2-0 in neutral-site contests this year. In MAC play, BGSU is 4-2 at home and 1-3 on the road.
From long distance, several Falcons have posted impressive shooting percentages. Farmer is shooting .455 from behind the arc, having made 30 of her 66 three-point field-goal attempts. Western is shooting .429 (27-of-63) from long distance, while Griech is shooting .411 (39-of-95) from behind the arc, with a team-high 1.95 treys per game.
Overall, Smith leads the team with 74 field goals made, and is shooting .477 from the floor, having gone 74-of-155. Freshman Kelly Kapferer is shooting .462 (30-of-65). In limited action, Adlington has shot 26-of-51 from the field (.510).
Western currently leads the team in rebounding (4.9 rpg), followed by Miller (4.3 rpg) and redshirt freshman Pam Brown (4.1 rpg). Adlington is averaging 6.3 boards in her nine games, and has led the team in rebounding in each of the last seven contests.
Austin leads the team with 3.7 assists and has 1.5 steals per game, while Miller has averaged 2.9 assists and has 1.9 steals in her 15 games to date. Western averages 1.4 steals and paces the team with 21 blocked shots on the year (1.0 bpg).
BGSU is shooting .418 from the floor, while the opponents have a field-goal percentage of .438. The Falcons are sinking free throws at a .728 rate, while the opponents are shooting .712 from the stripe. BG is shooting .378 from three-point range and averaging 7.24 triples per game, while the foes have shot .308 from behind the arc.
In MAC games only, Miller leads the team with 13.8 points, while Farmer has 10.5. Adlington has a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game. As a team, the Falcons are shooting .744 from the charity stripe and .371 from three-point land, while averaging 7.80 treys per game in league play.
BGSU finished the 1999-2000 season with an 11-17 overall record, and the Falcons ended MAC play with an 8-8 record after winning the last four games. The Brown and Orange saw a five-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to Western Michigan in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Tournament.
SCOUTING AKRON: Akron enters weekend action with an overall record of 4-17, and the Zips have a MAC record of 2-8 ... Akron has gone 2-2 over the last four games, however, including Tuesday's (Feb. 6) 75-58 win at Central Michigan ... the Zips are 1-5 at home this year, with the win coming on Jan. 27, a 59-58 triumph over Marshall ... individually, senior center Cheryl Bowles leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 13.1 points and 6.1 boards per game ... Bowles made all 10 of her shots from the field in the win over CMU ... senior forward Jamie Scott averages 8.8 points and 5.9 boards, while another senior, guard Jamie Krivak, is scoring at an 8.4 points-per-game rate ... guards Julie McDivitt (4.9 ppg) and Erica Caranfa (2.0 ppg) round out the probable Zip starting lineup ... McDivitt, a senior, was a four-year volleyball letterwinner for the Zips, while Caranfa, a freshman, joined the team in January after spending the fall semester at Baldwin-Wallace College ... coach Roxanne Allen has a record of 43-65 in her fourth year with the Zips ... she has an overall mark of 158-156 in her 12th year as a head coach.
THE SERIES: The Falcons lead the all-time series with 11 of the 12 MAC opponents (BG trails Buffalo, 3-2), and BGSU holds a 29-1 advantage over Akron ... the Falcons have won the last three overall meetings since UA's only win, in the 1999 MAC Tournament ... BGSU is 13-1 in road games vs. the Zips, and the Falcons won an 84-71 decision at JAR Arena last Feb. 23 ... this year, the Falcons posted an 84-65 win at Anderson Arena in the MAC opener for both teams (Jan. 3, 2001).
LAST TIME OUT: Junior Francine Miller scored a team-high 21 points, including a pair of free throws with 10.7 seconds left, as the Falcons downed visiting Ohio, 77-75, Wednesday (Feb. 7) ... BGSU shot a season-best .566 from the field, making 30-of-53 shots on the night ... the Brown and Orange shot a blistering .630 (17-of-27) in the first half, but could not put the Bobcats away until the very end of the game ... BGSU held a five-point lead (75-70) with 2:20 left, but OU's Ronita Whitfield and Lori Moorman each split a pair of free-throw tosses, and a Cathy Szall trey tied the game with 1:26 remaining, setting the stage for a furious finish ... each team missed a shot on its next possession, and BG got the ball back with less than 30 seconds to go ... with just 10.7 ticks on the clock, Miller was fouled near midcourt, and drained both of the ensuing free throws ... each team turned the ball over, and Ohio had a final chance to tie or win the game ... OU's leading scorer, Lori Moorman, got a pair of contested shots in the frantic final seconds ... after missing a shot, she grabbed her own rebound, but her next shot also fell away, and senior Jackie Adlington grabbed the ball as time expired ... Miller was one of four Falcons in double digits, as senior Afra Smith had 16 points, while classmates Angie Farmer and Adlington had 15 and 11, respectively ... Adlington led the Brown and Orange in rebounding for the seventh consecutive game, with nine ... for the Bobcats, Moorman led the team in scoring (24), rebounding (12) and assists (five).
THE STREAK IS OVER: The Falcons' win over Ohio Wednesday (Feb. 7) broke a five-game losing streak ... that slide marked the first time in school history that BG had dropped five consecutive MAC games ... BGSU went over 20 years and 325 games in MAC competition before losing five in a row.
EVERYONE'S A THREAT: Senior Jackie Adlington hit the first three-pointer of her Falcon career in Wednesday's (Feb. 7) Ohio contest ... Adlington became the 11th different Falcon to hit a trey this season ... 10 of those players had drained a "three" by the fifth game of the season ... a total of 10 different players hit a "three" last year, as well as in 1998-99 ... prior to the Dee Knoblauch Era, the most players to hit a trey in the same season was seven.
ADLINGTON ADDS A LOT: Over the past few weeks, senior Jackie Adlington has asserted herself as a force to be reckoned with ... she suited up for the Central Michigan game (Jan. 9), marking the first time since the season opener that she was in uniform ... Adlington had not played since breaking her foot vs. Youngstown State (Nov. 18) ... she played just one minute against Central, but has averaged 8.1 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds in the last seven games ... after totalling four points and nine rebounds in her first nine games as a Falcon, she has totalled 57 points and 55 boards in the last seven contests ... she has hit double digits in scoring in three of the last four games, and scored nine points in the other contest ... Adlington set or tied her BGSU high in either scoring or rebounding in four-straight games ... vs. Buffalo, she set BG highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds, posting the first double-double of her brief Falcon tenure ... Adlington has led the Falcons in rebounding in each of the last seven games.
ANDER-RIFFIC! Believe it or not, the Falcons' total of six three-pointers made against Kent State (Feb. 3) is the team's lowest total in a MAC home game in two years ... in eight home conference games last season, the Falcons made an average of 11.75 three-point field goals per contest ... BGSU shot an eye-popping .461 from three-point range in those games ... this year, the Falcons have totalled 50 treys in six MAC home games ... adding in the MAC Tournament first-round contest vs. Ohio last February, BGSU is averaging 10.1 treys and shooting .432 (152-of-352) over the last 15 home games vs. MAC teams ... the Falcons have made at least six triples in every one of those games.
THREE BALL, CORNER POCKET: In Mid-American Conference play last season, the Falcons averaged almost 10 three-point field goals made per game, with 159 successful triples in 16 games ... the Brown and Orange sank a season-high 12 against Akron, and added 10 at Ohio, nine vs. CMU and eight vs. Toledo, NIU and in the OU rematch ... BG has made a total of 237 successful triples in the last 26 MAC regular-season contests (9.12 per game).
WHO'S STARTING NOW? Last year, only seven different players started at least one game ... this year, a total of 11 different players have made at least one start ... no player has started all 21 games, and only two players (senior Afra Smith and freshman Lindsay Austin) have started 20 contests ... coach Dee Knoblauch has utilized 10 different starting lineups this season, including a recent stretch in which she used six different lineups in as many games ... she used only three different combinations during all of last season, and used the same lineup for the last 19 games of 1999-2000.
FALCONS IN NCAA RANKINGS: The Falcons were listed in one category when the NCAA released the latest national statistics ... as a team, BGSU was ninth in the nation in three-point field goals per game, with an average of 7.20 through games of Feb. 5 ... after the Ohio contest, the Falcons are now averaging 7.24 triples per game ... BGSU, of course, set a national record in that category last year, making 9.25 treys per game.
MAKE 'EM COUGH IT UP: Kent State's total of 25 turnovers last Saturday (Feb. 3) marked the most for a Falcon opponent this season ... BG had not forced that many opponent miscues since Ohio had 27 turnovers last Feb. 15.
NEED TO GET TO THE LINE: The Falcons have been on the short end of the free-throw statistics over the last few games ... in the Western Michigan and Kent State contests, BGSU attempted a total of just 13 free throws, while the opponents shot 60 ... Wednesday (Feb. 7), BG attempted 11 charity tosses to Ohio's 24 ... over the last three games, the Falcons are averaging 8.0 free-throw attempts to the opponents' 28.0 ... BG is averaging 13.3 charity tosses in MAC games, to the foes' 26.3.
BLOCK PARTY: The Falcons blocked a total of seven shots in Wednesday's (Feb. 7) win over Ohio ... that total was BG's most since a four-overtime game at Ball State two years ago (Jan. 6, 1999) ... the school record for blocks in a game is 11.
BLOCK PARTY II: Freshman Kelly Kapferer had four blocked shots vs. Ohio, the most of her brief Falcon career ... that total was the most by a Falcon in over five years, since Michelle Terry had four vs. Eastern Michigan on Jan. 17, 1996 ... the school record is six, set on three occasions.
MORE BLOCKING TIDBITS: By the 12th game of the season, the Falcons had surpassed the blocked-shots total for all of last year ... after posting a total of 39 blocks (1.39 per game) last winter, the Falcons now have blocked 65 shots this season ... BG is averaging 3.10 rejections per contest this year ... junior Dana Western entered the season with a career total of eight blocked shots ... through 21 games this year, she already has a total of 21 rejections to her credit.
77 GAMES AND COUNTING: The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the Dee Knoblauch Era ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 77 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
BENCH PROVIDES A LIFT: Not surprisingly, BGSU's injury woes in December seem to have translated into greater experience and depth in January ... the Falcons have gotten tremendous production from the bench players in recent games ... BGSU's bench has outscored the opponents' reserves in seven of the 10 MAC games ... some of the impressive margins during that time include 41-14 in the win at Ohio (Jan. 6) and 33-13 vs. Toledo (Jan. 13) ... the Falcons held bench advantages of 35-7 and 34-3, respectively, vs. NIU and Buffalo ... in the 10 MAC games, BG has gotten 317 points (31.7 per game) from the bench players to the foes' 192 (19.2 avg.).
KAPFERER KONNECTS: Freshman Kelly Kapferer made five of her six shots from the field en route to a season-high 10 points in the first win at Ohio (Jan. 6) ... for her efforts, she was rewarded with her first collegiate start vs. CMU ... in that game, Kapferer again scored 10 points, going 5-of-8 from the floor ... Kapferer is shooting .529 (18-of-34) over the last nine games, after shooting 12-of-31 (.387) during the first 12 contests of the year.
WORKING OVERTIME: The Falcons' overtime loss to Buffalo (Jan. 27) was BGSU's first OT game in nearly two years, since a 98-93 home triumph over Eastern Michigan on Feb. 20, 1999 ... in that game, as in the UB game, Francine Miller hit a three-pointer in the dying seconds of regulation to force the extra session ... the loss to Buffalo broke a five-game BG winning streak in overtime games ... the Falcons had not lost an OT contest since an 82-77 setback at Ohio in the 1996 MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round (March 5, 1996).
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Four different Falcons have posted double-doubles this year ... senior Jackie Adlington was the latest addition to that group, after totalling 14 points and 11 rebounds vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... the double-double was the first of her BGSU career ... junior Francine Miller had 23 points and 11 rebounds in BG's win over Charleston Southern on Nov. 24 ... the double-double was her first of the season and the 11th of her career ... nine of those double-doubles came last year, including four in MAC play and another in the first round of the conference tournament ... redshirt freshman Pam Brown, in just her third game in the Brown and Orange, had the first double-double of her career in that Charleston Southern game, while junior Dana Western had her first-ever double-double vs. Arizona (Dec. 8).
DOUBLE DIGITS: Jackie Adlington had 14 points in the Buffalo game (Jan. 27) ... Adlington became the 12th different Falcon player to hit double figures in scoring on at least one occasion this year ... eight different players hit double digits in that category during all of last year.
SMART, VERY SMART: The BGSU women's basketball team has had a great deal of success in the classroom ... as a team, the Falcons have a grade-point average of 3.13 through the fall semester ... eight of the team's 14 players have a cumulative GPA of 3.28 or better, led by sophomore Megan Jerome at a perfect 4.00 through her first three semesters at the University ... senior Angie Farmer has a 3.78 GPA.
SMART, VERY SMART II (OR, "FOUR-POINT GUARDS"): The Falcons' four true freshmen seem to have successfully made the transition to college life ... in addition to receiving regular playing time on the court, all four had a GPA of 3.45 or better during their first semester on campus ... point guards Lindsay Austin and Emily Pohl each had a perfect 4.00 GPA in the fall, while Stefanie Wenzel had a GPA of 3.76 ... Kelly Kapferer had a 3.45 GPA in thefall ... on the hardwood, Austin, Kapferer and Pohl all have played in every game this year, while Wenzel has seen action in 13 contests.
FARMER'S FREE THROWS: Senior Angie Farmer entered the season with a career free-throw percentage of .813, and has done nothing to hurt that stat this year ... this season, she has missed just three free throws in 43 attempts, for a .930 success rate ... she made her first 22 free-throw attempts of the MAC campaign, including sinking all 10 charity tosses in the win over Akron ... Farmer enters the Akron game with a .935 conversion rate (29-of-31) in league play.
60 ON "D" IS KEY: Not surprisingly, BGSU has been quite successful when limiting the opposition to 60 points or less over the years ... the Falcons held Toledo to 58 points in the Jan. 13 win, the second time BG had kept the opponent under 60 markers this season ... the Falcons have won 21 consecutive games when holding the opposition under 60 points ... since 1991-92, the Brown and Orange is 45-3 when holding foes to 60 points or less.
INJURY REPORT: The Falcons have had their share of injuries, and then some, this season ... the latest addition to the injured list is sophomore guard Megan Jerome ... Jerome was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her back last Friday (Feb. 2), and will miss the remainder of the season ... Dee Knoblauch's team actually went through the month of January relatively injury-free after playing five December games without three starters - seniors Jackie Adlington and Angie Farmer and junior Francine Miller ... Miller missed the Jan. 24 game at NIU with a thigh injury, but has played the last three contests.
STILL SHOOTING (AND MAKING) THE TREY: The three-point shot is a staple of a Dee Knoblauch-coached team ... last winter, the Brown and Orange set a new NCAA Division I record for three-point field goals made per game ... BGSU sank 259 treys in 28 contests, for an average of 9.25 per game ... through 21 games this season, the Falcons are averaging 7.24 three-pointers made per contest ... Bowling Green has made at least five treys in every game but two this season.
FREE-THROW SUCCESS, TOO: Nearly lost in all the three-point hoopla last season was the fact that the 1999-2000 Falcons also led the nation in free-throw percentage ... BGSU converted charity tosses at a school-record .773 rate, making 340 free throws in 440 attempts ... this season, the Falcons are sinking free throws at a .728 clip ... the Falcons shot .773 (68-of-88) from the free-throw line over the first five MAC games, before stumbling (4-of-11) at NIU ... BG righted the ship, making 9-of-10 vs. Buffalo, and the Falcons are now shooting .744 from the line in conference games this year.
MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME: In the first 12 seasons after the three-point shot was adopted (1986-87 to 1997-98), Bowling Green teams made a total of 666 three-pointers in 1,890 attempts ... over the last two-plus years, BGSU's totals are nearly 82 percent of the totals during those first 12 seasons ... through the Ohio game, Knoblauch's teams have made 546 treys in 1,509 tries since she became head coach of her alma mater.
WRITE THOSE RECORDS IN PENCIL: Entering last season, the school record for three-pointers made in a game was 12 ... BGSU hit double digits in that category no fewer than 12 times last year, including a 16-for-38 performance -- both school records -- in a win over Akron (Jan. 26) ... the Falcons have hit double digits three times in 2000-01, including twice in MAC play to date ... BG made 11 treys vs. Charleston Southern, 12 against Akron and 10 at Ohio.
YOUNG AT THE POINT: It is safe to say that the Falcons will start a freshman at the point-guard spot whenever the team takes the floor ... both of the team's point guards are frosh ... Lindsay Austin started each of the first 17 games, and has started 20 contests overall ... Emily Pohl, the other freshman point guard, made her first collegiate start vs. Buffalo (Jan. 27) ... Austin is averaging 28.1 minutes per game, with Pohl averaging 13.5.
TRIPLE YOUR FUN: Four current Falcons are ranked among the BGSU career three-point leaders ... senior Angie Farmer is currently in second place on the all-time school list for career three-point percentage (.429, 141-of-329), while junior Francine Miller is third (.402, 99-of-246) ... sophomore Kim Griech is now fourth on that list (.392, 65-of-166), while junior Dana Western is in eighth place (.372, 51-of-137) ... Farmer is second all-time in three-pointers made, while Miller is fourth ... Griech is eighth and Western is ninth on that list ... Farmer is second in three-point attempts, while Miller is now fifth ... Griech is eighth, while Western is 10th.
IS THAT A NEW RECORD? Before Dee Knoblauch returned to campus, the school records for three-point field goals made and attempted in a season were 97 and 296, respectively ... Knoblauch's first team made 135 treys in an even 400 attempts, and last year's squad shattered the records yet again, making a MAC-record 259 triples in 710 attempts ... currently, the 2000-01 squad is on a pace to make "only" 203 treys.
CAPTAIN'S LOG: BG seniors Angie Farmer and Afra Smith are the team captains for the 2000-2001 season.
