CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia got five runs in the second inning en route to a 5-1 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Saturday (March 24). The game, part of the Who's Hoo Invitational, gave the Cavaliers a sweep of the teams' two contests at The Park.
Virginia is now 4-0 in the tourney and 26-8 on the year, while the Falcons are 1-3 on the weekend and 8-10 on the season.
The Wahoos, who have won 22 of the last 24 games, touched BG freshman Jody Johnson for all five of the team's runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Cavaliers' four hits in that frame included a pair of doubles and a homer by Meaghan Young.
The Falcons' lone run of the game came in the top of the third. Junior Natalie Phillips was hit by a Kristen Dennis pitch, and junior Holly Frantz doubled down the left-field line as Phillips came all the way around to score. The next batter, senior Nikki Rouhana, singled to move Frantz to third, but Dennis struck out the next three BG hitters to prevent further damage.
Frantz and Rouhana had two hits apiece, and senior Lynsey Ebel was the only other Falcon to get a hit in the game.
The only other BG threat came in the fifth, as Frantz and Rouhana had back-to-back singles to start the inning. But, a fielder's choice and a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. Dennis struck out 13 hitters in the game and did not walk a batter.
For the Falcons, junior Andrea Genter pitched four-and-a-third innings of scoreless relief, giving up four hits.
BGSU concludes play in Charlottesville with a pair of games vs. Liberty University Sunday (March 25).
