BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team won by a 7-0 count for the fourth consecutive match, defeating NCAA Division III power Kalamazoo College at Keefe Courts Thursday afternoon (April 12).
With the win, the Falcons improve to 16-8 on the season, matching last year's win-loss record. BGSU has not won more than 16 matches in a season in 17 years. The Hornets drop to 9-6 in dual play.
The Falcons have won six of the last seven matches. Five of BGSU's eight losses this season have come to nationally-ranked teams.
Junior Vitek Wild continued his drive toward becoming the winningest player in school history, capturing two more matches vs. KC. Wild downed Kyle Harding in three sets at the top singles flight, and combined with classmate Mike Kossoff for a doubles win at the second flight. Wild now has a total of 139 career combined wins, moving him past Joel Terman (138 from 1994-97) into third place on the school list.
Wild now needs just two victories to tie Dave Anderton (141 wins from 1995-98) for second place, and three wins to match Radu Bartan's (142 from 1996-99) school record.
Sophomores Geoff Hiscox and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo won at the second and third singles flights, respectively, while Kossoff was a winner at the fourth flight.
Sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo won at the fifth singles flight, while Brandon Gabel, the Falcons' lone senior, posted a win at the sixth level.
Wild's singles match was the only contest to require three sets. Kossoff and Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo each posted their 20th singles win this year, becoming the fifth and sixth Falcons on the nine-member squad to do so in 2000-01.
Gabel combined with Hiscox for a win at the top doubles flight. Gabel's two wins on the day allowed him to move into the BGSU career top-10. He now stands tied for ninth with a combined career total of 123 victories.
Kossoff is now 15th in school annals with 113 total wins as a Falcon.
The other victorious doubles team consisted of Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo and freshman Nick Moxley at the third flight. Moxley, the team's lone frosh, now has 41 total wins this year to rank third on the team behind Hiscox (44) and Wild (43).
Kalamazoo has recorded seven NCAA Division III national championships, more than any other Division III programs. The Hornets have captured 62 consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) titles, the longest streak by any team at any level at any time (1936-present). KC has posted an incredible record of 383-1 in the MIAA from 1935-2000.
BGSU remains home for a Saturday (April 14) home contest vs. Northern Illinois University. That Mid-American Conference match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Keefe Courts.
Next week, the Falcons will host Wright State in Wednesday (April 18) non-league action before ending the regular season with a road match vs. Ball State.
