BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team completed an undefeated homestand with a 7-0 victory over Wright State University Wednesday afternoon (April 18). The non-conference dual match was held at BGSU's Keefe Courts.
With the win, the Falcons (18-8) completed their six-match homestand with a 6-0 record, having won all six matches by 7-0 scores. WSU drops to 16-6 on the year.
For the sixth consecutive match, the Falcons swept the six singles flights. Junior Vitek Wild was a straight-sets winner at the top flight, downing Quincy Jones and moving his career total to 141 combined wins.
Wild is now tied with Dave Anderton (1995-98) for second place on the BGSU career list for combined wins. His next victory, singles or doubles, will tie him with the school's all-time leader, Radu Bartan (142 wins from 1996-99).
Sophomore Geoff Hiscox was a winner over Chad Derry at the second flight, while classmate Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo downed Chad Camper at the third level. Derry had entered play with a 22-10 singles record this year, while Camper was 26-6 prior to Wednesday's loss.
At the fourth and fifth flights, respectively, senior Brandon Gabel and junior Mike Kossoff rallied to win after losing the first set. Sophomore Micael Lopez-Acevedo lost just one game in his sixth-flight win, improving his singles win total to a team-high 24 this year.
In doubles, the team of Wild and junior Ed Kuresman suffered a narrow loss at the top flight, but BG's other two teams posted wins. Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo teamed with freshman Nick Moxley for a flight-two victory, while Gabel and sophomore Peter Gardonyi were victorious at the third doubles flight.
The Falcons have won the most dual matches in 22 years, or since the 1978-79 team went 20-5. BGSU, 3-1 in MAC play this year, now turns its attention toward an important Friday (April 20) match. The Falcons will end the regular-season schedule by heading to Muncie, Ind., to face Ball State University (4-0 in MAC action).
With a win at BSU, the Falcons of head coach Jay Harris would clinch a tie for the MAC's regular-season title for the second consecutive season.
Following that match, the Falcons will ready for the MAC Tournament, which begins April 26 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
