AKRON, Ohio - Senior Nikki Rouhana's leadoff homerun gave pitchers Andrea Genter and Jody Johnson the only run they would need, and the Bowling Green State University softball pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout as the Falcons topped the University of Akron, 7-0. The game, the second half of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader, was held at UA's Buchtel Field Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the visiting Falcons improved to 21-14 overall and 9-3 in MAC play. BGSU leads the MAC's East Division. UA falls to 15-19 and 8-7, respectively.
Rouhana led off the game with a nine-pitch at-bat against UA starter Tina McCauley. That plate appearance culminated in a line-drive homer to right, her first round-tripper of the year, the put the Falcons ahead for good.
The Falcons got another run in the first inning, courtesy of the team's other three seniors. Jen Domschot had a one-out single, and Angie Domschot singled with two outs to advance her twin sister. Then, Lynsey Ebel lifted a bloop single to shallow right field that fell just beyond a diving UA second baseman Jackie Rothman to plate Jen Domschot.
Genter, a junior, had a no-hitter through two-and-two-thirds innings of work, before coming out of the game due to injury. Johnson, a freshman, came in and got Rianne Hess to fly out to end the third inning.
Johnson got the win in relief, improving to 3-2 on the year. She allowed just three hits in her four-and-a-third innings of shutout ball.
BG got some insurance runs in the fifth inning. Rouhana, who had three hits in the game and seven in the doubleheader, had a one-out double. Jen Domschot, who was 3-of-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, drew a walk, one of her two on the afternoon.
Then, junior Renee Rosemeier hit a ball to the base of the wall in leftfield for a two-run double. Angie Domschot followed with a double of her own, this one going to right-center. That hit plated Rosemeier and chased McCauley.
Another Rouhana double led off the seventh inning off relief pitcher Lisa Keenan. Then, sophomore Kandice Machain reached on an error by the UA shortstop. Machain advanced to second, while Rouhana took third base on the play. Jen Domschot ripped a single to right as both runners came around to score.
McCauley took the loss for the Zips, falling to 0-2 on the day and 6-8 on the year. She allowed five runs (two earned) and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Keenan gave up two runs (one earned) and three hits in her two-and-a-third innings stint.
The Falcons outhit Akron by margins of 11-3 for the game and 26-8 in the doubleheader. Rouhana singlehandedly almost matched the Zips' team total with her seven hits on the day.
In the second game, Rouhana was 3-of-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. She had a homer and a pair of doubles for a game slugging percentage of 2.000.
Jen Domschot reached base in all four plate appearances, drawing a walk in addition to the three hits. On the afternoon, she was 5-of-7 with a pair of walks. Angie Domschot was 4-of-8 in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-4 effort in the second game.
The Falcons pounded out five doubles and a homer in the nightcap, and BG had a total of 10 extra-base hits in the twinbill.
Julie Villard had two of the Zips' three hits in the second game.
BG will complete the road portion of the MAC schedule this weekend, heading to Buffalo for a three-game series. The Falcons and Bulls will play a single game Friday (April 20) and a Saturday (April 21) twinbill.
