BUFFALO, N.Y. - Junior Jessie Milosek threw a complete-game four-hitter, and classmate Renee Rosemeier homered as the Bowling Green State University softball team recorded a 4-1 win over the University at Buffalo Friday (April 20). The Mid-American Conference game was held at the UB Softball Stadium.
The win was the seventh in a row for the Falcons, who improve to 22-14 overall and 10-3 in MAC play. The Bulls fall to 8-32 and 3-13, respectively.
The hosts got on the board first, scoring an unearned run in the third inning. Jessica Kensy led off with a single, and Jessica Labella followed with a grounder to third. The throw to second was wide, allowing both runners to advance safely. Then, Laura Gilcrist singled to left-center to score Kinsey.
The Falcons did not break through against UB pitcher Heather Robbins until the fifth inning. Senior Nikki Rouhana, who had three hits in the game, singled with one out. Sophomore Kandice Machain then drilled a ball that caromed off Robbins' leg, allowing both Falcons to advance one base.
Next up was Jen Domschot, and the senior drilled a ball to the base of the wall in centerfield. Rouhana scored, while Machain took third on the hit. Then, Rosemeier's shot up the middle caromed off Robbins for another single, as Machain came in to score the go-ahead run.
The Falcons got some insurance in the seventh. Rouhana led off with a single and took second on a passed ball before Rosemeier came to the plate with one out. The rightfielder drilled her fourth homer of the year, which cleared the fence in leftfield and gave Milosek some breathing room.
Milosek set down the Bulls in order in the bottom of the seventh for her seventh complete game of the year. She is now 7-5 on the year.
Robbins took the loss, allowing nine hits in her complete-game effort.
The game marked the 18th consecutive contest in which the Falcons allowed two earned runs or less. The teams are scheduled to return to the UB Softball Field for a Saturday (April 21) doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
