CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University men's tennis sophomore Geoff Hiscox has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced late Wednesday. Hiscox earns the league honor for the second time in his Falcon career.
Hiscox, a native of London, Ontario, went 4-0 as the Falcons won two matches last week. He beat Jeff Keen of Division III power Kalamazoo College at the second singles flight (6-2, 6-2), helping the Falcons to a 7-0 victory over KC Thursday (April 12). In that match, Hiscox teamed with senior Brandon Gabel for a win at the top doubles flight.
On Saturday (April 14), Hiscox again won twice as the Falcons won another 7-0 match, this time over Northern Illinois. Hiscox downed the Huskies' Raymond van Wasbeek (6-1, 6-2) at the top singles flight, and again teamed with Gabel for a doubles win, this time at the second flight.
Those wins moved Hiscox's season records to 22-8 in singles (3-0 in MAC play) and 24-7 in doubles (3-1 in the MAC).
Hiscox did not compete in doubles in Wednesday's (April 18) non-league home win over Wright State University, but he captured a straight-sets win over WSU's Chad Derry at the number-two singles flight. The Falcons won that match, 7-0, completing a six-match homestand which saw BG win every match by that 7-0 score.
Hiscox now has 47 combined wins this season, most on the team.
The Falcons, 18-8 overall and 3-1 in MAC play, have won the most dual matches in 22 years, since the 1978-79 team went 20-5. BGSU heads to Ball State University for a Friday (April 20) match, and a win would give the Falcons a tie for the MAC regular-season title for the second consecutive year.
Following the BSU match, the Falcons of coach Jay Harris will prepare for the MAC Championships, which will be April 26-28 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
