BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team will head to Kalamazoo, Mich., to participate in the 2001 Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend. The tournament begins Thursday (April 26) and runs through Saturday (April 28).
In the first round of the single-elimination tourney, the Falcons, seeded third, will face sixth-seeded Buffalo. That match will begin at 9:00 a.m. Thursday at Sorensen Courts on the WMU campus.
The winner of the BGSU/UB contest will advance to Friday's (April 27) semifinal round to face second-seeded Western Michigan. That semifinal match will begin at 9:00 a.m.
In the other bracket, fourth-seeded Northern Illinois will face fifth-seeded Toledo in a 1:00 p.m. match Thursday, with the winner advancing to take on top-seeded Ball State Friday at 1:00 p.m.
The semifinal winners will meet in Saturday's (April 28) championship match at 1:00 p.m. The winner of that match earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
The Falcons went 18-9 during the regular season and finished third in the MAC with a 3-2 league mark. BGSU beat Buffalo, 7-0, in the teams' previous 2000-01 meeting (March 24), but the Falcons lost to Western Michigan by a 5-2 score (March 31).
Ball State won the regular-season crown with a perfect 5-0 record, followed by WMU (4-1), BGSU (3-2), NIU (2-3), UT (1-4) and UB (0-5).
Last season, the Falcons also opened MAC Championships play vs. UB, and won that match by a 4-0 score. BGSU was eliminated in the semifinal round by BSU.
