BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - For the second time on Sunday (April 8), the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team won at every singles and doubles flight. The Falcons defeated Cleveland State University at Keefe Courts, for the team's third 7-0 victory in two days.
With the victory, BGSU moves its dual-match record to 15-8 on the season, just one win off of last year's win total.
The Falcons lost a total of just nine games in the entire match, dropping a combined seven games in the six singles contests, and losing just two games over the three doubles flights.
The Falcons' lone freshman, Nick Moxley, won at the top flight over CSU's Franco Gallo. BGSU's only senior, Brandon Gabel, was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at the second flight. Each Falcon from flights two through six lost one or fewer games in their respective matches.
Sophomores Peter Gardonyi and Micael Lopez-Acevedo won at flights three and four, while juniors Ed Kuresman and Mike Kossoff were winners at the fifth and sixth flights. Both Lopez-Acevedo and Kossoff won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Micael Lopez-Acevedo increased his team-leading singles victory total to 22, while Moxley now has 21. Sophomore Geoff Hiscox and junior Vitek Wild, neither of whom played in the CSU match, each have 20 singles wins this season.
In doubles, Gabel teamed with Micael Lopez-Acevedo for an 8-1 win at the top flight. Lopez-Acevedo's twin brother, Nicolas, and Moxley won another 8-1 decision at flight number two. The Falcons' third-flight tandem of Gardonyi and Kuresman did not lose a game.
On the BGSU career list, Wild ranks fourth with a total of 137 combined wins. The junior needs one more win to tie Joel Terman (1994-97) for third place, and he is just five wins away from BG career leader Radu Bartan (142 wins from 1996-99). Wild ranks fourth with 73 singles wins and is sixth with 64 doubles victories in his career.
Hiscox has 42 total wins this season, tying his total for all of last year. That total also ties him for eighth on the BGSU single-season list. Wild, who holds the school record with 55 combined wins (1998-99 season), is tied for 10th with 41 wins this year. Moxley now has a total of 40 victories in his freshman year.
The Falcons will continue a six-match homestand with a Thursday (April 12) match vs. Kalamazoo College. That contest will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Keefe Courts.
