Akron, Ohio - The University of Akron plated eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one on Saturday against visiting Bowling Green State University for a 14-13 Mid-American Conference victory. The Falcons went into the bottom of the seventh with a 13-6 advantage, but Akron hit four home runs to steal the win.
BGSU (36-14 overall, 18-7 in MAC) jumped ahead early with two runs in the top of the first thanks to RBI-singles from senior Lee Morrison and junior Nick Elrod. However, the Zips came right back with two in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-2.
Neither team scored in the second frame before the Falcons had their biggest inning of the game in the third. Third baseman Scott Dukate singled home a run and then catcher Tim Newell ripped a two-run double to right-center field. BGSU added another run for four in the inning and giving the visitors a 6-2 lead.
The Zips chipped away at the Bowling Green lead over the next four innings by scoring a run in each, including three solo homers. Two of those came off the bat of first baseman Jim Gemler. BGSU responded with nearly each Akron outburst with three runs in the fourth and two in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The three Falcon runs in the fourth came off of three consecutive RBI hits and the two in the seventh were via Morrison's third home run of the series, a two-run shot, giving BGSU a 13-6 advantage and three outs away from securing the win.
That's when the Zips went to work, leading off the home-half of the seventh inning with a solo home run, the fourth time in the game. After Ty Moorhead flew out to Morrison in right field, Akron added three more homers in the inning, including the game-winner off of the bat of Craig Welch.
Neil Schmitz (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing the final two runs of the game.
