TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Mid-American Conference will host its 2001 championship football game at the home field of the West Division champion, it was announced Thursday (May 24) by the MAC Council of Presidents at the close of the league's annual spring meetings. The Nov. 30 game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with a 6:00 p.m. start time.
The Council of Presidents also re-emphasized its intention to identify a neutral site for future championship games in cities expressing an interest in hosting the event, among which are Canton (Fawcett Stadium), Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium) and Detroit (the new downtown Ford Field).
The previous four MAC championship games, each carried by either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2, have been staged at Marshall Stadium/James F. Edwards Field in Huntington. W.Va. The MAC championship game is just one of three Division I-A title games, along with the Big 12 and Southeastern Conferences.
In additional business, scheduling formats and opponents for men's and women's basketball for the next two years were also announced. For MAC women's basketball, the 16-game conference schedule will now include each school playing every league opponent at least once during the regular season. West Division women's teams will now play nine games within their division (four division teams twice, one division team once) and seven cross-over games versus the East (one versus each East team). East Division teams will play 10 games within their division (four teams twice, two teams once) and one cross-over game against each of the six West teams.
Additionally, beginning in the 2002-2003 season, an RPI criteria has been established for non-conference scheduling, with an overall intent to improve the strength of non-conference women's basketball schedules in the MAC.
The 18-game MAC men's basketball conference scheduling framework for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons remains consistent with the past two years. West Division teams will play a home-and-home with each divisional opponent and one cross-over opponent (12 games) and will play the remaining six East Division opponents once each (6 games). Six of the seven East Division teams will play five East teams twice (10 games), one game against a sixth East opponent (1 game), a home-and-home with one West opponent (2 games), and one game each against the remaining five West teams (5 games). A single East Division team will play home-and-home contests within the division (12 games) and cross-over with each West Division opponent once (6 games).
The Falcon men's basketball team is scheduled to play each East Division opponent twice, with the exception of Marshall. BGSU will meet Marshall just once, at Anderson Arena.
BGSU will play a home-and-home series against arch-rival Toledo of the West Division, and the Brown and Orange will face the other five teams in the West once each.
