
Falcons Win Home Opener, 3-0

Bowling Green, Ohio - After scoring six unanswered points against last year's MAC West Champions, the Falcons defeated the Western Michigan Broncos in three games, winning 30-23, 30-26, and 32-30. This match was the first time that Bowling Green has defeated Western since 1997. BG is now 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the MAC East.
Bowling Green took the lead early in the first game of the Friday night match and did not let it go until game three. The Broncos went up 5-4 in the game, leading for the first time in the match. The Falcons showed "character and maturity" in game three according to Coach Denise Van de Walle, falling behind the Broncos by as much as five points. Bowling Green did not regain the lead until point 18, where both teams battled to the end, with Bowling Green rallying behind a great crowd in Anderson Arena to win the game 32-30 and to take the match.
"This was a great win and a great home opener," commented Coach Van de Walle. "It was an ideal situation, with a gym full of fans and a great match. We did what we were supposed to do. I am pleased."
The Falcons were once again led by their seniors. Caty Rommeck led the team with 15 kills, six blocks and four digs. Natalie Becker had a team-high 40 assists, as well as six digs and one block. Amber Vorst recorded a team-high 11 digs, in addition to her five kills. Kate Yeo led the team with two service aces and had seven digs, as well.
Junior Kristin Gamby and sophomore Laura Twyman had nine kills a piece, as well as each posting two blocks. Also stepping up from the sophomore class was Susie Norris, registering seven kills, nine digs and two blocks in the victory.
Also seeing action for the Falcons were senior Karen Amstutz and sophomore Nadia Bedricky.
The Falcons had 45 kills and hit .194 as a team, while Western Michigan had 46 kills, but hit only .094. The Falcons had a team total eight blocks and the Broncos had nine.
BGSU returns to the road facing Oakland September 25 (7:00 p.m.) and MAC opponent Northern Illinois September 28 (7:00 p.m.).
