Mid-American Conference Football Players of the Week Week 3 - Games of Sept. 22
East Division
Offense: Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Miami (Fr., Findlay, OH) - Completed 80.0% (20-of-25) of his passes in leading the RedHawks to a 21-14 win over Cincinnati. Roethlisberger piled up 264 yards and was responsible for all three Miami touchdowns on passes of 7 and 43 yards, and a scoring run of 11 yards. He did not throw an interception and has completed 60.3% of his passes this season.
Defense: Brandon Hicks, NG, Bowling Green (Sr., Fairborn, OH) Had an interception which he returned 31 yards for a touchdown to key the Falcons, 42-23 win over Temple. Hicks, score pushed BG,s cushion to 21-10 early in the third quarter. He also added two sacks for minus 22 yards among his seven tackles. BG leads the MAC in scoring defense (12.0 ppg) and total defense (265.0 ypg).
Special Teams: Dallas Pelz, PK, Buffalo (So., Holland, N.Y.) - Booted the first three field goals of his career from 36, 32 and 37 yards in the Bulls, 37-20 triumph over Connecticut. UB snapped its four-game losing streak. His first field goal gave UB a 3-0 lead and his second tied the game at 13. Pelz also had kickoff duties for the Bulls.
West Division
Offense: Chester Taylor, TB, Toledo (Sr., River Rouge, MI) - Scored five touchdowns (4 rushing, 1 receiving) in a 52-28 conference win over Central Michigan. Totalled 164 rushing yards on 22 carries in celebrating his 22nd birthday. The five TDs tied a MAC record school record for most touchdowns in a single game.
Defense: Vince Thompson, CB , Northern Illinois (Jr., Chicago, IL) - Broke open a tight game with a 33-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 41-16 win over Sam Houston State. Added six solo stops, one tackle for a loss and three deflections.
Special Teams: Nick Melcher, DE, Western Michigan (rs-Fr., Oak Forest, I.) playing in just his third game, Melcher broke through the middle and blocked a Michigan punt in the third quarter. The effort resulted in the Broncos getting the ball at the Michigan 34-yard line

Offense - Akron RB Brandon Payne (89 yds., 1 td, 22 att. at Purdue), Bowling Green WR David Bautista (8 rec., 90 yds., 1 TD versus Temple), Buffalo RB Marquis Dwarte (150 yds., 3 TDs, 25 att., 6.0 ypc versus Connecticut), Kent State QB Joshua Cribbs (144 rush yards, 117 passing yards at West Virginia, 84-yds. TD run, stadium record), Ohio WR Joe Mohler (3 rec. 86 yds., 2 TD versus Iowa State).
Defense - Akron OLB Ryan Myers (10 tackles, 9 solo, 1 dfl. at Purdue), Buffalo LB Ryan Buttles (6 tackles, 1 tfl, 1 int., 1 pbu in first college start at Connecticut), Miami LB Matt Robillard (14 tackles, 6 solo, 2 tfl versus Cincinnati), Ohio LB Chris London (14 tackles, 7 solo versus Iowa State).
Special Teams - Bowling Green DB Janssen Patton (returned a short kick 42 yards for a TD versus Temple), Kent State P Jared Fritz (8 punts, 41.6 average at West Virginia), Miami PR Eddie Tillitz (4 ret., 37 yds. versus Cincinnati), Ohio P Dave Zastudil (6 punts, 44.7 average versus Iowa State).

Offense - Eastern Michigan WR Kevin Walter (7 rec., 123 yds., 1 TD versus Indiana State), Northern Illinois SE P.J. Fleck (8 rec., 153 yds., 2 TDs versus Sam Houston State), Western Michigan QB Jeff Welsh (school record 36-of-58 completions for 374 yds. and 2 TDs at Michigan).
Defense - Toledo LB Sid Daniels (8 tackles, 1 fr, 1 int. at Central Michigan), WMU LB Bryan Lape (team-high 8 tackles, 6 solo, 1 sack at Michigan).
Special Teams - Northern Illinois PK Steve Azar (11 points, 2-2 FG, 5-5 PAT versus Sam Houston State), Toledo FS Andy Boyd (blocked punt at Central Michigan).
