Alyson Gabel Wins Singles Crown

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's tennis team opened the 2001-02 season over the weekend, winning one flight title at the BGSU Invitational. The five-team tournament was held Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 29-30) at Keefe Courts.
No team scores were kept at the event, which featured Illinois at Chicago, Indiana State, Northern Iowa and Wright State, in addition to the Falcons.
Newcomer Alyson Gabel won the Falcons' lone title, going a perfect 3-0 at the third singles flight. The junior was BG's most successful performer with a weekend record of 5-1, which included a 2-1 mark and second-place finish at the number-two doubles flight with sophomore Jessica Johnson.
UIC captured the other four singles crowns, as Ayca Gumuscu won the top singles flight, while teammate Britta Dohman was the champion of the second flight. The Flames' Alyson Stalzer won the fourth flight, and Kim Harris took the crown in the fifth flight.
In doubles play, the NIU team of Kristina Bothova and Jessica Landes won the top flight, while WSU's Kara Dunbar and Marie Craig topped the Gbel/Johnson duo for the title at the second level. The NIU tandem of Korkoi Quaye and Mercedes Pollmeier won the third-flight title.
Each of the five singles flights consisted of eight competitors, while the top two doubles brackets featured eight teams apiece. The third doubles flight had three teams.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend, heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Wolverine Fall Invitational Friday through Sunday (Oct. 5-7).
