BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University recorded a 6-1 win over the Bowling Green State University men's tennis team in Saturday (Jan. 19) action. The dual match, BGSU's first of the season, was held at the Indiana Tennis Center.
IU jumped to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. IU's Milan Rakvica and Zach Held downed BGSU seniors Mike Kossoff and Vitek Wild, 8-4, at the number-two flight. Sophomore Joel Carney and senior Geoff Hiscox suffered an 8-3 loss at the top flight, as did senior Ed Kuresman and junior Peter Gardonyi at the third level.
The Hoosiers then took five of the six singles points, with three of the IU wins coming in straight sets. BGSU's lone win came at the fifth flight, courtesy of Carney. The sophomore downed IU's Ryan Recht in a three-set tiebreaker. After Carney took the first set 7-5, Recht came back to win the second 6-1. In the third-set tiebreaker, Carney posted an 8-6 triumph.
Junior Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo extended his opponent to three sets at the second singles flight. BGSU's other singles competitors included Hiscox (No. 1), Wild (No. 3), sophomore Milos Jirout (No. 4) and Kossoff (No. 6).
The Falcons played without freshman Ian Bliss, who was sitting out due to academic violations.
"Indiana is one of the tougher places to play in the Big Ten," said BGSU coach Jay Harris. "They had a great crowd there. Indiana was a little too tough for us, we needed a little more toughness, especially out of our upperclassmen.
"Our juniors and seniors are very capable of stepping up more than they did in this match. I think they know that, and I think maybe they were just a little bit hesitant in this, our first match."
The Falcons will return to action with a bevy of home matches, all on the same day. BGSU will take on Dayton, Youngstown State and Chicago State next Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo. The Dayton match is scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m., with the Falcons taking on YSU and CSU at 4:00 p.m. at 5:00 p.m., respectively.
