Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Brittany Anderson (Fort Collins, Colo.), Jill Lause (Dublin, Ohio), Molly Martin (Noblesville, Ind.) and Marisa Smith (Arnold, Pa.) will join the Falcons for the 2002-03 academic year.
"We are excited about our first class and feel strongly that these four can help restore the tradition of Bowling Green women's basketball," said Miller. "All four are excellent in the classroom and all four are not afraid of hard work.
"We have answered some questions with this class. We have added another good point guard, two wings with size that have tremendous three-point shooting ability and a center with size and strength."
Anderson, a 5-11 wing, is a senior at Rocky Mountain High School. She led the state of Colorado in three-point field goals made last season.
Anderson scored a team-best 15.7 points per game for the Lobos of coach Terri Mawhinney last season, and also led the squad in rebounds (141), assists (71) and steals (60).
Recently, Anderson was listed as the 41st-ranked guard in the nation, and the fourth-ranked guard in the state of Colorado, by Mike White's All-Star Girls Basketball Report. She played at the prestigious Adidas Camp at the University of Pittsburgh. The camp featured 180 of the top high-school players across the country.
"Britt is an outstanding shooter with size at the wing," said Miller. "She will compete for the starting position at the 'three' from day one. She has a tremendous feel for the game and is a very talented passer from the wing position."
Lause, a 6-2 center, is a senior at Dublin Coffman High School under Mary Ann Grimes (former head coach at the University of Akron). She is considered one of the top centers in the state by Ohio Girls' Basketball Magazine. In the All-Star Girls Basketball Report, Lause was the 58th-ranked post player in the country (third in the state of Ohio).
This season, Lause is averaging 13 points, 6.5 rebounds and two blocked shots per game to date.
"Jill is one of the best centers in the Midwest in the Class of 2002," said Miller. "She is a physical center that can step out on the perimeter with good range. Jill was the first of the four signees to verbally commit to the new era in BGSU women's basketball."
Martin, a 5-8 point guard, is a senior from Noblesville High School. Her coach, Leah Wooldridge, is a former assistant coach at both Ball State University and the University of Detroit Mercy. Martin was listed as the 27th-ranked point guard in the nation, and the fourth-ranked point guard in Indiana, by the All-Star Girls Basketball Report.
This season, Martin has helped NHS to a 9-2 record. She is averaging 7.1 points and 7.6 assists per game, and also has 3.5 rebounds per contest. Like Anderson, Martin played at the Adidas Camp in Pittsburgh.
"We are elated to have Molly join the BGSU family," said Miller. "She is one of the best point guards in the Midwest. Molly will excel in our system and has a chance to be a special player."
Smith, a 5-10 shooting guard, is a senior at Valley High School under head coach John Cope. Last year, as a junior, she passed the 1,000-point mark for her career, and also became the school's all-time scoring leader. She entered this season with 1,350 points.
Additionally, Smith was the Valley News-Dispatch Player of the Year in 2000-01 after helping the Lady Vikings to a record of 21-6, a share of the Section 1-AAA title and the first first-round playoff win in school history. Smith, who averaged 19.5 points per game last year, has earned all-section honors in each of her first three years. She has participated at the Reebok All-American Camp.
"Marisa is a gym rat that knows how to score," said Miller. "She will come in every day and work hard, and therefore raise the level of play. Marisa provides good size at the 'two' or 'three' position and has tremendous three-point range."
The Falcons have an overall record of 3-8 heading into the Mid-American Conference portion of the 20001-02 schedule. The Falcons will host Kent State University in Wednesday (Jan. 2) action, with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's venerable Anderson Arena.
