BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's soccer freshman Kristy Coppes has been named to the Soccer Buzz Great Lakes Region All-Freshman Team, the on-line web site has announced. Coppes is the first freshman in school history to be selected to the team.
The Great Lakes Region is comprised of a total of 49 schools that sponsor women's soccer. The awards were the result of voting by all Division I head coaches, as well as the Soccer Buzz staff.
Coppes, the 2001 Mid-American Conference Newcomer of the Year, tallied 12 goals in her initial season, tying the school single-season record. She had 26 points on the year, the second-highest total in BG annals, and just three points shy of that seasonal record. (Both records -- 12 goals and 29 points -- were originally set by Tracy Gleixner in 1998.)
Coppes, a native of Findlay, Ohio, tied a number of records on the season, including consecutive matches with a goal (four), most goals in a match (three vs. Youngstown State) and most points in a match (seven vs. YSU). After just one season in the Brown and Orange, she already ranks fourth on the BGSU career goals list, and seventh on the career points list.
The Falcons finished the 2001 campaign with an overall record of 7-10-2 and a league mark of 2-9-1.
