Cleveland, Ohio -- The first two Mid-American Conference football Game of the Week selections have been made and feature the two preseason divisional favorites and another MAC team that has surprised the pundits thus far.
The league's Nov. 2 telecast will feature Heisman Trophy candidate Byron Leftwich and the Marshall University Thundering Herd as they play at Akron in a 3:30 (EST) game. Two years ago in the Rubber Bowl, the Zips pushed the Herd to the brink before Marshall pulled out a last-second 31-28 win that secured the East Division title.
Leftwich leads the nation in total offense with 411.6 yards per game and tops the MAC in passing efficiency (162.5) and touchdown passes (15). The Zips' offer a talented quarterback of their own in Charlie Frye (1,906 passing yards), who needs just 413 more yards to establish a school record for most passing yards in a season.
The Marshall at Akron game will be carried live on FOX Sports Net Ohio, FOX Sports Net Detroit, FOX Sports Net Pittsburgh, FOX Sports Net Midwest and Sunshine Network.
The Nov. 9 contest will have the top 25 ranked Bowling Green State University Falcons at the Northern Illinois Huskies with a 2:30 (EST) kickoff. BG is No. 23 in the ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches poll and No. 25 in the Associated Press poll. This week is the first time BG has been ranked in the top 25 since December of 1985.
NIU, a preseason pick to finish fourth, is in first place in the West Division with a 3-0 mark after Saturday's 48-41 triumph at Miami. The Huskies Michael Turner tied a MAC record with five rushing touchdowns and added 222 yards on 20 carries. Turner also leads the nation in all-purpose yardage with 207 per game. The Falcons Josh Harris leads the nation in scoring with 15.6 points per game in leading his team to a 5-0 record.
The Bowling Green at Northern Illinois contest will be aired live on FOX Sports Net Ohio, FOX Sports Net Detroit, FOX Sports Net Pittsburgh, Empire Sports Network and Sunshine Network. FOX Sports Net Chicago will tape delay the game with the time to be determined.
Additional MAC Games of the Week will be aired on Nov. 16 at 3:30 and Nov. 23 at Noon and 3:30. The Nov. 23rd 3:30 game will be Marshall at Ohio, with the other games to be determined.
Michael Rehgi will provide the play-by-play, Charles Arbuckle the commentary and Sharon Thorsland the sideline reporting on MAC Games of the Week.
