Falcons Win Scrimmage At Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Curt Miller got his first look at his Falcons in action against another squad Saturday night (Nov. 2), and, for the most part, he liked what he saw. The Falcons defeated the University of Findlay, 37-30, in a 20-minute scrimmage at UF's Houdeshell Court.
In addition to the 20-minute scrimmage which was closed to the public, the Falcons and Oilers also played several other 10-minute segments. The additional time gave the teams a chance to experiment with different lineups and combinations.
BG never trailed in the 20-minute scrimmage, and a jumper by senior Karen Stocz gave the Falcons a 12-point lead -- the biggest of the period -- at 25-13 midway through the stanza.
The hosts cut the Falcon lead to four points with under two minutes left, but senior Francine Miller hit a three-point field goal with 54 seconds left to provide the final margin.
"We were happy to play against someone else," said Miller. "We've been needing to play against another team to see how we are progressing, both offensively and defensively. Tonight marked the midpoint of our practice season, so -- with three weeks to go until our first regular-season game -- this was a good opportunity to play against a very talented Division II team.
"I was happy with our performance tonight. We won the first 20 minutes against a good Findlay team, and we also won the three 10-minute segments. We got good contributions from many of the players, with the veterans leading the way."
In the 20-minute scrimmage, the Falcons' balanced scoring attack included seven points from Francine Miller. Sophomore Sakima Smith matched Miller, scoring seven points off the bench, and junior Stefanie Wenzel had six points.
Freshman Marisa Smith hit a pair of three-point field goals off the bench to score six points in only four minutes of action.
Junior Lindsay Austin had four points and tied Wenzel for rebounding honors with five. Austin also had five assists.
"Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel continue to spearhead our attack offensively, and really gave us a spark," said Curt Miller. "We look for them to make a lot of plays, and they didn't disappoint tonight.
"It was nice to see Francine Miller play 16 minutes of the 20-minute scrimmage with little pain in her knee. And, I'm very pleased with the performance and effort in the post from Karen Stocz.
"Due to the recent knee injury to Pam Brown, we remain very thin in the post, with only three true post players. Karen, our one veteran post player on the roster, really played a terrific game tonight, and we're going to need a lot out of her this season. She provided some aggressive and physical play in the post that we will need this year.
"Marisa Smith was 2-for-2 at the arc (in the 20-minute scrimmage), giving us a big spark off the bench with her six points in four minutes.
"In other segments, we had the opportunity to put our four freshmen on the floor together. We're really pleased with the performance of those players; they stepped up and made some big shots."
With BGSU three weeks into preseason practice, and just under three weeks away from the regular-season opener, Miller was grateful for the chance to work on a few things, and for the chance to evaluate the game film and make any needed adjustments.
"Findlay exposed some of our weaknesses, and we'll watch the film, go back to work and try to improve some of those things," said the head coach. "We fouled too much, and put Findlay on the foul line a great deal in the first 20 minutes. Once we had an opportunity to talk about that (after the first 20 minutes), we did a better job.
"Overall, we're pleased with our effort, and excited that we still have a few weeks before the start of the regular season."
BGSU's next action comes on Tuesday, Nov. 12, as the Falcons host the Premier All-Stars in an exhibition contest. That game will begin at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
The team opens the regular season with three home games, beginning with a Nov. 22 contest vs. Youngstown State. That contest is also set for a 7:00 p.m. tip at Anderson.
