Cleveland, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference academic football team was announced today as 27 student-athletes were honored as voted on by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives.
The selections were made based on each nominees academic and athletic achievements for the 2002 season. The team is comprised without regard to position.
Three MAC schools had four honorees with Central Michigan, Kent State and Northern Illinois leading the way. Two individuals on the list have perfect 4.00 GPA - Michael Griffis and Maurio Medley of Kent State. Three of the honorees are also Verizon Academic All-Americans this season - Travis Barclay of Ball State, Rob Turner of Central Michigan and Chris Tuminello of Toledo.
Of the 27 selections, eight had previously been selected to the all-MAC team as selected by the league's head coaches. Those honorees are first-team members Kyle Croskey of Central Michigan, Curtis Head of Marshall, Tim Vincent of Northern Illinois and David Gardner and Chris Tuminello of Toledo. Second team all-MAC selections also on the academic squad are Chris Haneline of Bowling Green, Jimmy Fryzel of UCF and Matt Dunker of Northern Illinois.
