South Bend, Ind. - Despite several comebacks by Bowling Green after one-goal deficits, Notre Dame scored the final two goals of the game for a 6-3 win over the visiting Falcons on Saturday night.
BGSU freshman Brett Pilkington's slapshot from the blueline went past the left shoulder of ND goalie Morgan Cey and cut the Irish lead to 4-3 just :59 seconds into the third period. However, Notre Dame's Evan Nielsen and Cory McLean scored goals in the third period for the final three-goal verdict.
"I thought five-on-five, for most of the evening, we were a pretty good hockey team. They were much better on the special teams," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch.
The Irish got on the board first with a goal from Yan Statsny at 4:54 (assist Tom Galvin). It took the Falcons just over 12 minutes, but the visitors tied the score when freshman Ryan Barnett rebounded his own miss with assists from Alex Rogosheske and Jon Sitko (17:02). The teams went into the first intermission with the score knotted at 1-1. Notre Dame outshot BGSU 15-10 in the first period.
ND's leading scorer, Rob Globke, gave the Irish the lead again at 9:00 of the second period on the first of three power play goals in the period. The Falcons battled back again, this time it was junior defensman Brian Escobedo with his first goal of the season knotting the score at 2-2. Rogosheske and Barnett assisted.
Notre Dame reeled off two power-play goals at 13:40 and 16:13 of the second period to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission. Thanks to four power plays in the second period, ND outshot the Falcons 23-16 in the period.
After Pilkington's goal early in the third period, BGSU failed on four power plays and finished the game 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Meanwhile, the Irish were 4-for-6 on the power play.
Sophomore Jordan Sigalet had 44 saves in net for the Falcons on 50 shots faced. Cey had 40 saves on 43 shots faced. Both teams finished with eight penalties (16 PIM).
For Rogosheske, the game marked the first that the transfer had multiple assists for the Falcons while it was the first two-point game of Barnett's career, as well (1-1--2). His one assist was the first of the season.
