Western Michigan Defeats Falcons in OT, 5-4

Bowling Green, Ohio - Western Michigan's Dave Cousineau scored the game-winning goal with just four seconds left in overtime for a 5-4 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Bowling Green on Saturday night at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Bronco goal came off of just their fifth power play try of the game after BGSU's Scott Hewson was called for high sticking at 3:59 of the overtime.
"I thought our effort was good tonight," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "We played hard. Western's got a good hockey team. They've got a good club. I don't think we deserved to lose that hockey game. I thought overall we had the edge in play. But they scored the goals. The puck went into the net a little too easy tonight."
For the second night in a row, Western Michigan (14-10-4 overall, 8-9-3 CCHA) struck first with a goal by Jeff Campbell at 6:21 in the first period. However, Bowling Green came right back with a goal by senior Greg Day at 10:56. He was assisted on the goal by D'Arcy McConvey and Hewson.
Then, early in the second, McConvey gave BGSU its first lead of the weekend with his seventh goal of the season at 1:53. Day was credited with the assist and the Falcons led 2-1.
WMU scored the next two goals to go up 3-2 with scores from Dana Lattery (PPG, 9:14) and Paul Glynn (12:39) in the second period.
The Bronco lead lasted until midway into the third period when Day scored his second goal of the night and 15th of the season, at 11:33. McConvey and Hewson assisted on the goal.
Western Michigan retook the lead less than two minutes later with a goal from Pat Dwyer at 13:31 for a 4-3 Bronco edge. Again, the Falcons fought back, this time with a game-tying goal by senior Austin de Luis at 15:40 in the third. For de Luis, it was his third of the season and first since Nov. 23 at Lake Superior.
The tie lasted into overtime until Campbell's game-winner.
"We had plenty of chances to score goals," said Powers. "We just didn't do a good enough job of keeping them out of their net."
BGSU outshot the Broncos for the game, 30-29, including 12-7 in the second period. But WMU got off four shots to Bowling Green's one in the overtime period. BGSU was 0-for-3 on its power play tries while Western Michigan was 2-for-5.
WMU goalie Jeff Reynaert had a game-high 26 saves and Tyler Masters had 24 saves in the net for BGSU.
The Falcons (7-18-5 overall, 5-13-2 CCHA) take to the road for the only time in February next weekend for a two-game series at Ferris State (Feb. 8-9). Friday's faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. while Saturday's is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start.
