Big Rapids, Mich. - Bowling Green dropped a Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest at Ferris State University on Friday night, 5-2.
Ferris State's Carl Thomson lit up the lamp first at just 3:02 in the first period, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage.
FSU would add two goals to that lead before the end of the first period. Chris Kunitz (6:34) and Phil Lewandowski (17:18) gave the home team a 3-0 lead heading to the lockerooms at the first break. It was Kunitz' league-leading 23rd goal of the season and 26th overall.
The Falcons had their chances in the first 20 minutes with two shots on goal by three different players and two power play attempts. Both teams finished with 13 shots in the first period.
"The first period is the tale of the game," said BGSU coach Buddy Powers. "We had four-to-five great opportunities to score and we didn't finish. And on our end, Tyler had a bad night."
Freshman goalie Jordan Sigalet entered the game for the Falcons in place of starter Tyler Masters to start the second period. It was the first action for Sigalet since suffereing a concussion in the third period of BGSU's game at RPI on Jan. 19, four games ago.
Ferris State scored on its first shot attempt of the second period off of the stick of Lewandowski (5:37), his second of the night, and giving the home team a 4-0 lead. However, on FSU's first power play of the game, Mark Wires netted BGSU's second short-handed goal of the season. Austin de Luis picked up a feed from Marc Barlow and worked the two-on-one fast break with Wires to cut the Falcon deficit to 4-1 at 7:57 in the second period.
Freshman DenisWhite cut even deeper into the Bulldog lead at 12:08 when his rebound off of a Steve Brudzewski wrister went past FSU goalie Mike Brown. White's third goal of the season brought Bowling Green to within two, 4-2. Ryan Minnabarriet was also credited with an assist. BGSU ended the second period with a 10-9 shot advantage.
"We came back strong in the second period and Sigalet came in and played well," Powers said. "At 4-2, I thought we were starting to control the game. Our power play was something that we needed to finish. Our power play could have gotten us back in the game."
FSU (13-13-1 overall, 10-10-1 CCHA) added another goal in the third period from Rob Collins (11:26), giving the Bulldogs the final 5-2 decision.
FSU outshot Bowling Green 38-27 for the game. FSU was 0-for-7 on its power plays while the Falcons were 0-for-5.
