CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's tennis team has been picked to place second in the Mid-American Conference this season. The prediction is the result of the MAC's Preseason Poll, which was announced by the league office Thursday (Feb. 21). The poll reflects the results of voting by the league's head coaches. Five of the MAC's six men's tennis coaches participated in the voting.
The Falcons of head coach Jay Harris received a total of 26 points in the voting, trailing Ball State by a single point. Western Michigan received 18 points to rank third, followed by Northern Illinois (17), Toledo (11) and Buffalo (six).
BGSU, however, was the choice to win the MAC Championships by three of the coaches, with BSU receiving the other two votes.
Harris and the Falcon squad finished 19-10 in dual-match play a year ago, and the Falcons were 3-2 in MAC regular-season action to finish third. BGSU lost in the semifinal round of the league championships.
The Falcon roster features three seniors, three juniors, two sophomore newcomers and a freshman. BGSU has six returning letterwinners from last year's squad. BGSU's next action is Friday, March 1, when the Falcons are scheduled to host both Ferris State and Xavier at Shadow Valley in Toledo.
BGSU opens the MAC portion of the schedule with an April 6 home match vs. Western Michigan. The MAC Championships will be held April 25-27 in Buffalo, N.Y.
